Use cases

Microgrid at work

From a single off-grid site to a multi-source industrial installation, Microgrid adapts to where the work is. Select an application and see the difference it makes.

Naval vessel supplied by containerised power banks

No single point of failure

If one unit goes offline, the supply never drops.

All Power Banks connect to the AC bus, each one a self-contained system with its own inverter/chargers, batteries, and monitoring. If one unit goes offline, the others instantly take over without any manual intervention. The supply never drops.

Native Microgrid note:In a Native Microgrid, Power Banks coordinate autonomously via the AC bus. Remove any unit and the others continue without interruption.

Controller-based Microgrid note:In a controller-based Microgrid, each source has its own dedicated controller. There is no single master controller, and the loss of one component does not cascade through the rest.

Expand off-grid, without a rebuild

The existing system simply becomes one of the Power Banks.

Adding capacity to an existing off-grid system no longer means tearing the old one apart. Connect one or more Power Banks to the same AC bus and the system that's already there becomes one of them. A stationary installation that has reached its limit can simply be scaled up. No rebuild required.

Native Microgrid note:A firmware update and minimal rewiring are all it takes to add an existing Victron system to a Microgrid. It becomes one of the Power Banks on the shared bus.

Controller-based Microgrid note:For sites adding AC-PV, wind power, or large AC-gensets, a controller-based Microgrid coordinates the new sources alongside the existing ones.

Mobile power containers staged for deployment

Deploy and redeploy

Right-sized for the job. Ready for the next.

A construction site runs steady for months, then more equipment arrives and demand spikes. An event needs full power for bump-in, much less for bump-out. Add Power Banks when demand rises, remove them when it drops.

Rental operators can stock standardised Power Banks, combine them to match the job and redeploy them when the contract is finished. There's no need for reconfiguration between projects, and all units stay in use rather than sitting idle.

Native Microgrid note:Power Banks forming a Native Microgrid don't need reprogramming when moving from one site to another. Simply hook up the cables and switch on.

Controller-based Microgrid note:A system using controllers can also be deployed for mobile use. When relocating to a different site, the source configuration may need updating.

Combine existing hybrid gensets

It doesn't take a lot of effort to get hybrid efficiency at scale.

Existing Victron-based hybrid gensets can be upgraded to Microgrid-ready versions with minimal effort. Once they are, each can operate as a hybrid genset or a Power Bank by simply changing the settings. As each genset already runs at its optimal load, connecting two or more on a shared AC bus scales that efficiency. The larger the setup, the greater the savings in fuel and maintenance.

Native Microgrid note:Each Power Bank manages its own DC-coupled charging: MPPT solar, DC generator, or AC-to-DC charger. Scale by adding Power Banks; no controllers required.

Controller-based Microgrid note:A controller-based Microgrid synchronises AC-gensets alongside storage and AC-solar on the shared bus, achieving the same efficiency gains at larger scale.

All sources, working as one

Grid, gensets, solar, and storage. Coordinated automatically.

Sites with a grid connection, AC generators, and a solar array often run them as separately managed systems. A controller-based Microgrid brings all sources onto one shared bus and coordinates them, prioritising the most logical source, preventing conflicts, and keeping the system balanced 24/7. This smart energy management extends to peak shaving, optimised self-consumption, and Dynamic ESS, which charges and discharges the batteries based on predicted use, solar generation, and live energy rates.

Battery storage extending an on-grid installation

More capacity, no replacements

Add storage to what's already there. The controllers handle the rest.

A controller-based Microgrid works with the generators and renewables that are already on site. Add Victron-based Power Banks and the controllers take it from there, bringing battery storage and the existing power sources onto the same bus and managing dispatch across all of them. The Microgrid adds virtually unlimited power, without major system changes.

Run gensets alongside renewables

When solar and wind pick up, generator runtime drops.

Projects combining large AC-gensets with battery storage and renewables need controllers to synchronise all sources on the AC bus. Victron-based Power Banks buffer the load and supply peak power, while the controllers manage dispatch. Self-consumption increases, generator runtime drops, and surplus power can be exported when conditions allow.

Industrial-scale multi-source power installation

Built for large installations

Industrial-scale power, fully managed.

When a project runs multiple energy sources at an industrial scale, a Microgrid provides the architecture to bring them all together. Victron supplies reliable power conversion and battery storage at the core, scalable through Power Banks alone or using external controllers to add AC gensets, solar, wind, or the grid.

Native Microgrid note:Scales up to 400 kW by combining independent Power Banks on a shared AC bus.

Controller-based Microgrid note:No fixed ceiling. Scale as the project demands, with full dispatch control across all sources.

Store surplus energy, cut peak demand

The system decides when to draw from the grid and when not to.

Heavy industrial sites, data centres, and commercial campuses often face higher grid tariffs due to demand peaks and fines for exceeding feed-in limits. A controller-based Microgrid integrates Victron storage alongside existing AC-PV, drawing from the batteries when grid demand peaks and storing surplus solar for self-consumption or export when the time is right.

The advantages of
Victron Microgrid

Add capacity, not complexity

Adding a Power Bank to an existing system only requires connecting it to the shared AC bus. No complex setting changes, no data wiring between units, no specialist needed on site. Hook up the cables, switch on, and the new unit starts contributing immediately.

A supply that never drops

Each Power Bank operates as a fully self-contained system with its own inverter/chargers, batteries, and monitoring. If one goes offline, the others instantly share the load, without manual intervention or a controller to take down with it.

Mix sizes freely, scale to 400 kW

Combine Power Banks of different sizes on the same AC bus. Add units as demand grows, remove them when it drops. Connect to an existing Victron installation and expand from there, all the way up to 400 kW.

Simple, safe commissioning

Setting up a Victron Microgrid doesn't require specialist certification or specific safety procedures. The Power Banks run on proven, low-voltage Victron hardware, making them familiar to any trained installer and safe to handle.

Reduce fuel costs and emissions

Each Power Bank manages its own charging sources: solar, a DC generator, or an AC-to-DC charger. Generators run at their optimal load rather than chasing peaks or idling. The result: lower fuel consumption, running costs, noise levels, and emissions.

Remote monitoring via VRM

All Power Banks can be added to a dedicated Microgrid dashboard on the Victron Remote Management (VRM) portal, using Installation Groups. Monitor total output, voltage, frequency, and battery state for each unit on one screen, from a few feet to thousands of miles away.

Energy, whatever happens

A Microgrid is a self-contained energy network that generates, stores, and manages its own power on site. It operates independently, scales as demand grows, and keeps running when other power sources fail.

Always the right size

A Microgrid grows with demand. Expand an existing installation by adding more capacity alongside it. Scale up for a busy period and back down when it's over. Or move units to a new site when the job is done. The Microgrid adapts to the project, not the other way around.

Independent Power Banks, shared load

A Native Microgrid is built from Power Banks, each a complete, autonomous energy system. All units have their own inverter/chargers, batteries, monitoring, and charging sources, such as solar, a generator or an AC-to-DC charger. Connect multiple Power Banks and they share the load automatically, without the need for a central controller or data wiring.

Multiple AC sources, one coordinated system

A controller-based Microgrid handles projects with multiple AC sources. An external controller brings grid, generators, solar, and storage onto one bus and decides what runs, when, and at what priority. Victron supplies the power conversion and storage; the controller handles everything else.

Same hardware, any stage of growth

The Power Banks that have been there from day one stay when the site grows. Adding grid, solar, wind or AC gensets means adding controllers, not having to replace what's already running. The system extends without being locked in to one setup. No dead-end configurations, same hardware throughout.

Proven hardware,
no surprises

A Microgrid is built on the same proven Victron inverter/chargers that installers already trust and work with. There are no new hardware categories or unfamiliar certification requirements to consider, only the reassurance of having safe, low-voltage technology throughout. Controller-based setups use tried-and-tested EMS equipment from established Victron partners.

Frequently asked
questions

How does Microgrid differ from hybrid generators?

A hybrid generator combines a single inverter/charger system with a generator to create a more efficient power supply. Microgrid connects two or more independent Power Banks to a shared AC bus, enhancing the efficiency of multi-asset systems and scaling capacity well beyond what a single hybrid genset can deliver.

Can a Victron-based hybrid genset be converted to a Microgrid-ready genset?

Yes, in many cases it can. A qualified Victron specialist can assess the genset and carry out the conversion, which involves a wiring check, a firmware update, and a connector swap from standard CEE plugs to the safer PowerLock connectors.

Can a Power Bank operate in both Hybrid genset and Microgrid mode?

Yes. A Power Bank can be configured for dual-purpose operation, switching between standard hybrid generator mode and Microgrid mode. This makes it a versatile asset for rental operators who need flexibility across different deployments.

How much power can a Native Microgrid deliver?

A Native Microgrid can scale up to 400 kW by connecting multiple Power Banks to a shared AC bus. The actual capacity depends on the number and size of units in the system.

Is it possible to add one or more AC sources to a Microgrid?

Yes. Adding AC sources such as large-scale solar arrays, wind turbines, or a grid connection requires a controller-based Microgrid. External controllers bring all sources onto one shared bus and manage which runs when. Victron supplies the power conversion and storage; the controllers handle everything else. CRE is the first certified integration partner, with more to follow.

Native or controller-based Microgrid: which fits the site?

A Native Microgrid suits temporary and smaller sites where redundancy and easy installation are the main priority. It's also the right option when upgrading existing hybrid gensets. A controller-based Microgrid is the necessary route when one or more AC sources need to be integrated, such as large-scale solar arrays, wind turbines, or a grid connection. These are more common on larger, permanent sites.

How do I monitor a Microgrid remotely?

Each Victron Power Bank has its own GX device for local monitoring. All units on a site are grouped in VRM (Victron's remote management portal), providing a complete overview of the Microgrid from any laptop, tablet, or smartphone. Fleet operators can monitor multiple active Microgrids across different sites in a single VRM view. System management of controller-based Microgrids sits with the controller manufacturer's own monitoring solution.
