And in the small green cabinet is Victron blue &#8211; providing the clue as to what makes this site special.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>Solar in Peru<\/h3>\n<p>Peru uses fossil fuel for around half of its total energy generation. In order to limit this trend companies like <a href=\"http:\/\/enertekglobal.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">EnerTek Global<\/a>, who have their headquarters in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lima\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lima<\/a>, have become instrumental in changing attitudes towards energy and its use. EnerTek Global is a Peruvian environmental engineering company which provides services in the areas of renewable energy systems for hydrological, wind and solar projects. They are also Victron Energy distributors.<\/p>\n<p>As Peru receives approximately 2.5 times more solar energy than Northern Europe, this makes it an ideal location for the installation of solar photovoltaic systems (PV). In such a location solar PV systems together with batteries are capable of providing a reliable power supply both day and night. In addition, PV is often more cost effective than diesel generators and means less CO<sub>2 <\/sub>emissions. That has to be good news.<\/p>\n<h3>Colegio Franklin Delano Roosevelt<\/h3>\n<p>Last year EnerTek&#8217;s team of international engineers installed a full Victron Energy PV system<br \/>\nto power a large classroom in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amersol.edu.pe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Colegio Franklin Delano Roosevelt<\/a>. The system is a pilot with the aim of demonstrating the capabilities of solar PV, as well as educating students and staff as to how solar works.<\/p>\n<p>If the statistics toward the end of last year (over a seven month period in 2015) are anything go by the system is already a success. Installation and testing of the system took two days in total.<\/p>\n<h3>System components<\/h3>\n<p>The system has an installed capacity of 2.8 kWp consisting of 10 x 280W-24V\u00a0Polycrystalline <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/solar-pv-panels\/bluesolar-panels\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BlueSolar panels<\/a> using Victron <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/solar-charge-controllers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">solar charge controllers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2016\/02\/Victron-Solar-Panels.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5581\" target=\"_blank\"><div class=\"full-size-image container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5581 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2016\/02\/Victron-Solar-Panels.jpg\" alt=\"Victron Solar Panels\" width=\"730\" height=\"487\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2016\/02\/Victron-Solar-Panels.jpg 730w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2016\/02\/Victron-Solar-Panels-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px\" \/><\/div><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Battery storage consists of 220Ah of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/batteries\/gel-and-agm-batteries\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Victron Energy AGM batteries<\/a> (4 X 12V\/220Ah), a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/inverters-chargers\/multiplus-12v-24v-48v-800va-3kva\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MultiPlus<\/a> 48\/5000\/70-100 Inverter\/Charger with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/panel-systems-remote-monitoring\/bmv-700\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BMV-700 battery monitory<\/a> and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/panel-systems-remote-monitoring\/color-control\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Color Control GX<\/a> for on and\/or offsite system monitoring and control.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2016\/02\/Roosevelt-CCGX-and-BMV.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5584\" target=\"_blank\"><div class=\"full-size-image container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5584 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2016\/02\/Roosevelt-CCGX-and-BMV.jpg\" alt=\"Roosevelt CCGX and BMV\" width=\"730\" height=\"487\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2016\/02\/Roosevelt-CCGX-and-BMV.jpg 730w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2016\/02\/Roosevelt-CCGX-and-BMV-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px\" \/><\/div><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Education<\/h3>\n<p>As part of this project is about education, for the students and staff of the school, here is how it works:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The photovoltaic cells capture the sun\u2019s energy and convert it into electricity.<\/li>\n<li>The solar charge controller converts this energy from a high to a low voltage so that it is ready either to go to the batteries or the inverter.<\/li>\n<li>During the day, the inverter takes the electricity from the sun, changes it from DC (direct<br \/>\ncurrent) to AC (alternating current), and sends it to the classroom.<\/li>\n<li>At night, when there is no solar energy available, the inverter provides electricity to the<br \/>\nclassroom from the batteries. These are charged using excess solar energy in the daytime.<\/li>\n<li>If there is a prolonged period of heavy clouding or higher than normal electricity use in the<br \/>\nclassroom, the grid will be used to supplement the solar energy.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2016\/02\/Installer.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5589\" target=\"_blank\"><div class=\"full-size-image container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-5589 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2016\/02\/Installer.jpg\" alt=\"Installer\" width=\"730\" height=\"487\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2016\/02\/Installer.jpg 730w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2016\/02\/Installer-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px\" \/><\/div><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Conclusion &amp; Credits<\/h3>\n<p>I have to say personally I&#8217;m a great fan of practical and educational projects such as this.
