This time it was the <span class=\"current\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sailingtoday.co.uk\/awards2015\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sailing Today Awards 2015<\/a><\/span> &#8211; Green Award (in association with Astins Sailing Sculptures). This is the second award this year for the vessel, having previously won <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/2015\/02\/12\/victron-partner-oceanvolt-award-helsinki-international-boat-show-2015\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Boat of the year 2015<\/a>, at the Helsinki International Boat Show.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>Zero emissions<\/h3>\n<p>What makes this boat so special is it has zero emissions, as no diesel engine is fitted. That is not to say the vessel lacks power or indeed a power plant. Far from\u00a0 it. The Arcona 380Z is fitted with Oceanvolt&#8217;s electric propulsion SD15 Sail Drive shown in orange (plus many other colours) below. Besides that you&#8217;ll of course also note the familiar blue colour of Victron Energy products, which is a result of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/2013\/12\/11\/oceanvolt-teams-up-with-victron-energy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Oceanvolt and Victron Energy teaming up back in 2013<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Another special partnership in commissioning the Arcona 380Z is the one with UK Sailmakers, as the mainsail of the vessel is fitted with innovative Power Sails\u00ae a solar sail developed and patented by Alain Janet, CEO of Solar Cloth System and owner of UK Sailmakers France. Add in further flexible solar panels on the deck, boom and mast plus substantial regeneration from the propeller when sailing to charge the lithium batteries &#8211; and it is only then that you begin to realise that a modern zero emission sailing yacht is now a reality.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/electric_motor_arcona_380Z.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><div class=\"full-size-image container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4441\" src=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/electric_motor_arcona_380Z.jpg\" alt=\"electric_motor_arcona_380Z\" width=\"730\" height=\"487\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2015\/10\/electric_motor_arcona_380Z.jpg 730w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2015\/10\/electric_motor_arcona_380Z-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px\" \/><\/div><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Victron onboard<\/h3>\n<p>Besides being fitted with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/solar-charge-controllers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BlueSolar MPPT <\/a>solar charge controller, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/inverters-chargers\/multiplus-12v-24v-48v-800va-3kva\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Multiplus<\/a> 48\/3000\/35, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/dc-dc-converters\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Orion DC-DC converter<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/panel-systems-remote-monitoring\/color-control\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Color Control GX<\/a> and using remote monitoring via the <a href=\"https:\/\/vrm.victronenergy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">VRM<\/a> (Victron Remote Management) portal, Oceanvolt are the first to use the solar cloth Power Sails\u00ae referred to in previous blogs on a production based boat. These diverse system all need to be monitored and controlled. Below you can see the Arcona 380Z &#8216;s control panel which includes the Color Control GX to achieve this, along with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/panel-systems-remote-monitoring\/digital-multi-control-panel-gx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Digital Multi Control<\/a> to manage the Multiplus.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/control_panels_arcona_380Z.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><div class=\"full-size-image container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4447\" src=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/control_panels_arcona_380Z.jpg\" alt=\"control_panels_arcona_380Z\" width=\"730\" height=\"487\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2015\/10\/control_panels_arcona_380Z.jpg 730w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2015\/10\/control_panels_arcona_380Z-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px\" \/><\/div><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Bringing the technologies together<\/h3>\n<p>As some of you may know I converted my own sailing yacht to electric propulsion about 3 years ago and chose to use Victron Energy products wherever possible. My own boat is a hobby rather than a commercial project, but back then I believed that electric propulsion was going to be a rewarding, quiet and particularly fulfilling experience. That has proved to be the case, yet my personal dream other than carrying out my own individual project &#8211; was that someone somewhere would make all this mainstream.<\/p>\n<p>Without well funded visionary commercial companies like Oceanvolt, that could have remained a personal pipe dream. In fact without Oceanvolt and their partners I doubt any comprehensive zero emissions systems would have been fitted to a production sailing yacht, such as the Arcona 380.<\/p>\n<p>The latest award to my mind is recognition of all this and how well they have brought the companies and technologies together. The short video below I think captures that.<\/p>\n<h3>Conclusion<\/h3>\n<p>In light of recent events with cars and diesel engines, this award seems timely if not an ideal opportunity for other boat builders to consider the planet and help rid the sea of diesel particulates. To my mind Oceanvolt and Arcona are pioneers in this field.
