{"id":32056,"date":"2025-10-17T08:15:03","date_gmt":"2025-10-17T06:15:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/?p=32056"},"modified":"2026-03-05T17:24:34","modified_gmt":"2026-03-05T15:24:34","slug":"catamaran-with-electrics-built-into-its-dna","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/2025\/10\/17\/catamaran-with-electrics-built-into-its-dna\/","title":{"rendered":"Catamaran with electrics built into it&#8217;s DNA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When <a href=\"https:\/\/www.offgridshop.eu\" target=\"_blank\">Sailectron Services<\/a> were invited to become involved in the design and installation of an electric power system on board an <em>Adventure Catamaran 55<\/em> &#8211; whilst it was still a bare hull &#8211; the efficiencies achieved were remarkable.<\/p>\n<p>As well as allowing device stowage and conduits for the owner-specified utilities to be absorbed discretely into the build &#8211; the savings in time, and the production of coherent materials schedules were impressive.<\/p>\n<p>Sailectron Services are based in Austria, Europe &#8230;the build was taking place in Thailand, SE Asia.<\/p>\n<p>Using Rhinoceros CAD enabled Sailectron Services to plan their installation remotely, placing power devices within yet-to-be-built housings, perfectly sized for the bespoke system. As part of the process, outstanding matters were able to be decided in a single on-site meeting. All components can be controlled on board from the navigation station; remote monitoring and support is possible using Victron&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/panel-systems-remote-monitoring\/vrm\" target=\"_blank\">VRM<\/a> platform. Pre-configured and tested components were then shipped to Thailand &#8211; greatly accelerating the installation process. Within three weeks, the system was integrated into the yacht and tested by their four-person team. They operate two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/inverters-chargers\/multiplus-12v-24v-48v-800va-3kva\" target=\"_blank\">MultiPlus<\/a> 24\/5000 inverter\/chargers which simultaneously serve as battery-chargers and transfer switches for uninterrupted power-source switching between shore AC and inverter operation.<\/p>\n<p>Five <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/chargers\/phoenix-smart-ip43-charger#downloads-datasheets\" target=\"_blank\">Smart IP43 Charger<\/a> 24\/25 units also serve as chargers &#8211; not only enabling faster charging from shore power, but they also allow any shore power connection to be used worldwide because of their input voltage range.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/battery-management-systems\/lynx-smart-bms\" target=\"_blank\">Lynx Smart BMS<\/a> &#8211; battery management system &#8211; controls the charge depending on the status of the LiFePO4 bank: Charging curves are regulated via DVCC depending on the state of charge, voltage, and temperature. The MultiPlus inverter\/charger units also continuously monitor the external grid for correct voltage and frequency, and disconnect it if necessary to protect the onboard electrical equipment.<\/p>\n<p>The IP43 Smart Charger ensures that the batteries are not drained during inverter operation, even in the event of a poor external power supply. Nine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/solar-charge-controllers\/smartsolar-mppt-75-10-75-15-100-15-100-20\" target=\"_blank\">SmartSolar 100\/20<\/a> charge controllers control the solar harvest in a synchronized manner and ensure maximum shade tolerance with separate control circuits.<\/p>\n<h4>Monitoring<\/h4>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/communication-centres\/cerbo-gx\" target=\"_blank\">Cerbo GX<\/a> with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/display-and-panels\/gx-touch-50\" target=\"_blank\">GX Touch 70<\/a> serves as the central interface for controlling the system. Temperatures, tank levels, and various digital inputs are also processed here. A Beckhoff Programmable Logic Controller is used to control numerous tanks (in order to minimize the number of through-hull fittings, the owner requested small tanks for each waste area, with centralized and automated waste management). Fill levels are transmitted to the monitoring system via a \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/communication-centres\/gx-tank-140\" target=\"_blank\">GX Tank 140<\/a>. For local monitoring on board, all B&amp;G chart plotters, together with the Victron touchscreen user interface, have been integrated via an HTML page.<\/p>\n<p><em>Michael Ponbauer<\/em>, CTO, says: &#8220;<em>Victron Energy\u2019s open approach regarding data communication allows us to seamlessly integrate the Victron ecosystem with the Beckhoff PLC. This way even complex systems including engine controls, fire alarm systems and onboard lighting can be operated from a single user interface<\/em>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The system can also be accessed remotely via the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/panel-systems-remote-monitoring\/vrm\" target=\"_blank\">VRM<\/a> platform, allowing not only control and monitoring but also remote maintenance and updates.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2025\/10\/Screenshot-2025-10-16-at-11.36.06_304456770.png\" target=\"_blank\"><div class=\"full-size-image container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-32130\" src=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2025\/10\/Screenshot-2025-10-16-at-11.36.06_304456770.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"627\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2025\/10\/Screenshot-2025-10-16-at-11.36.06_304456770.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2025\/10\/Screenshot-2025-10-16-at-11.36.06_304456770-750x459.png 750w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2025\/10\/Screenshot-2025-10-16-at-11.36.06_304456770-300x184.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/div><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Switch Panels<\/h4>\n<p>Sailectron Services manufactured their own custom-made switch panels using either anodized aluminium, or a special backlit PMMA material for the main DC distribution board, the control stations, the navigation table, and various other positions.<\/p>\n<h4>Commissioning<\/h4>\n<p>After launch, every socket and circuit breaker was tested including insulation resistance &#8211; as well as a thermal imaging test &#8211; in which the system is loaded with its maximum possible power (charging and discharging).
