They need heated incubators, oxygen provided by oxygen-separators, and the overnight nursing team need light to monitor the babies in their care &#8211; looking for signs of change in colour or behaviour. During power cuts they used to rely on the torch facility of their mobile phones to check on babies in their care until their phones ran out of charge.<\/p>\n<p>A power cut lasting just twenty minutes is long enough to affect the outcome for some sick babies.<\/p>\n<p>The usual recourse to diesel generators did not provide the hoped-for solution, says Neonatal Head Nurse, Juliana Conteh &#8211; the fuel was too expensive, or sometimes it was stolen. During one power cut of more than 24 hours, the diesel supply simply ran out. A solar array of 92 panels, together with battery storage of 77kWh provides reliable electricity to match the quality of medical care from the team.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_31116\" style=\"width: 1444px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-31116\" class=\"wp-image-31116 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2025\/05\/Screenshot-2025-05-07-at-09.46.28_290460606.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1434\" height=\"912\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2025\/05\/Screenshot-2025-05-07-at-09.46.28_290460606.png 1434w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2025\/05\/Screenshot-2025-05-07-at-09.46.28_290460606-750x477.png 750w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2025\/05\/Screenshot-2025-05-07-at-09.46.28_290460606-1024x651.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2025\/05\/Screenshot-2025-05-07-at-09.46.28_290460606-300x191.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1434px) 100vw, 1434px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-31116\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><\/div><\/a> Dr. Niall Conroy<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Speaking of the change, Dr Niall Conroy says: &#8220;<em>There are babies in our care, right now, who wouldn&#8217;t still be alive without our solar power system.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Solar energy from the panels is harvested by three solar charge controllers &#8211; two are the high voltage <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/solar-charge-controllers\/smartsolar-mppt-rs-450-tr\" target=\"_blank\">SmartSolar MPPT RS<\/a> \u00a0450\/200 chargers, suitable for long string PV arrays and a 48V architecture; the third, controlling a smaller second PV array mounted with a different aspect, is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/solar-charge-controllers\/smartsolar-mppt-ve.can\" target=\"_blank\">SmartSolar<\/a> 250\/100. Quattro&#8217;s have two AC inlets &#8211; automatically switching to the live source &#8211; and two AC outlets; the second AC outlet will disconnect non-essential loads when the AC source (grid or generator) is lost.<\/p>\n<p>The power supply, harvest and storage can be monitored locally using the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/display-and-panels\/gx-touch-50\" target=\"_blank\">GX Touch<\/a> user interface which gives access to a powerful menu of historical analysis, programming, and live data.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2025\/05\/Screenshot-2025-05-07-at-12.00.03_290461389.png\" target=\"_blank\"><div class=\"full-size-image container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-31121\" src=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2025\/05\/Screenshot-2025-05-07-at-12.00.03_290461389.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"439\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2025\/05\/Screenshot-2025-05-07-at-12.00.03_290461389.png 1000w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2025\/05\/Screenshot-2025-05-07-at-12.00.03_290461389-750x329.png 750w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2025\/05\/Screenshot-2025-05-07-at-12.00.03_290461389-300x132.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/div><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/communication-centres\/cerbo-gx\" target=\"_blank\">Cerbo GX<\/a> communication centre device acts as the data communication gateway and controls the system; \u00a0it also provides remote management &#8211; allowing the system to be interrogated and programmed from a phone or laptop anywhere in the world, without the need to visit site. Remote reporting is enabled by the internet based platform Victron Remote Management (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/panel-systems-remote-monitoring\/vrm\" target=\"_blank\">VRM<\/a>) which is free to use. VRM monitors hundreds of thousands of installation &#8211; allowing users and engineers to interrogate or control a single site or hundreds of sites. It is not necessary to <em>check in<\/em> with the system as VRM can provide automatic push notifications or emails when any alarm parameter has been reached. Intelligent sorting and grouping of sites makes fleet control simple.<\/p>\n<p>The Neonatal ward&#8217;s new energy system also provides power to a water pump. For two years water had to be collected in buckets because the pump was broken &#8211; but now there is also a reliable water supply!<\/p>\n<p>Work to improve electricity supply and health standards at the hospital are ongoing.
