{"id":29575,"date":"2024-11-06T15:31:10","date_gmt":"2024-11-06T13:31:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/?p=29575"},"modified":"2024-11-06T15:31:10","modified_gmt":"2024-11-06T13:31:10","slug":"the-mountain-bike-events-getting-children-into-the-great-outdoors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/2024\/11\/06\/the-mountain-bike-events-getting-children-into-the-great-outdoors\/","title":{"rendered":"The mountain bike events getting children into the great outdoors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>&#8220;Two years ago I was at a mountain bike race listening to the noise of a generator and struggling to hear the Public Address system<\/em>; says Ed Jones from <a href=\"https:\/\/offgridps.com\" target=\"_blank\">Off-Grid Power Systems<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;I decided there and then that I was going to build a power generation trailer so they didn\u2019t need a generator. <\/em><em>My son races &#8211; he&#8217;s just finished his third season with the <a href=\"https:\/\/ohiomtb.org\" target=\"_blank\">Ohio chapter of NICA<\/a> (National Interscholastic Cycling Association) and I wanted to do my part to support their mission to get more kids on bikes.<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">NICA began 13 years ago with the mission to build &#8216;Strong minds, bodies, character and communities through cycling&#8217;. Today there are 32 leagues across America.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Approximately 200 student athletes (SA\u2019s) in grades 6-12 took part in the Ohio 2024 season just ended. There are family entertainments &#8211; cycling and non-cycling &#8211; throughout the weekend.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Sunday sees more events, with the awards ceremony at 3:30pm until about 4:15pm &#8211; then it\u2019s clean up, pack up, and head back home before dark. A packed weekend for volunteers and participants alike<\/p>\n<p>During the professionally organised event power &#8211; which used to be provided by a noisy generator &#8211; is needed for a whole load of functions:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li>Push-to-talk two-way radio transceivers as well as amateur radio<\/li>\n<li>Automated timing equipment at the start\/finish line<\/li>\n<li>A floor fan to keep the timing system cool in the summer<\/li>\n<li>A floor fan to keep the two timing judges cool<\/li>\n<li>Inflatable finish line (which doubles as a backdrop for the awards ceremony)<\/li>\n<li>Laptops.<\/li>\n<li>Laser printer<\/li>\n<li>Large screen TV for race results<\/li>\n<li>PA system for music, race announcements, and awards ceremony<\/li>\n<li>Starlink &amp; WiFi<\/li>\n<li>Charging e-bikes (some of the Course Marshalls and Sweeps use e-bikes)<\/li>\n<li>Providing power to the Trek tents (they are a league sponsor and also do on-site bike repairs for SA\u2019s)<\/li>\n<li>Provides device charging (phones, tablets, etc) to staff, teams, and spectators<\/li>\n<li>120V air compressor for tyre repairs at the race<\/li>\n<li>There is a refrigerator\/freezer inside the trailer to provide refreshments<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ed says: &#8220;<em>Now that we offer ample silent and sustainable power we notice that every time there&#8217;s a race, more uses are added to the list<\/em>!&#8221;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2024\/10\/Screenshot-2024-10-28-at-16.15.24_273977877.png\" target=\"_blank\"><div class=\"full-size-image container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-29597\" src=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2024\/10\/Screenshot-2024-10-28-at-16.15.24_273977877.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"2332\" height=\"1040\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2024\/10\/Screenshot-2024-10-28-at-16.15.24_273977877.png 2332w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2024\/10\/Screenshot-2024-10-28-at-16.15.24_273977877-1500x669.png 1500w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2024\/10\/Screenshot-2024-10-28-at-16.15.24_273977877-750x334.png 750w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2024\/10\/Screenshot-2024-10-28-at-16.15.24_273977877-2048x913.png 2048w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2024\/10\/Screenshot-2024-10-28-at-16.15.24_273977877-1536x685.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2024\/10\/Screenshot-2024-10-28-at-16.15.24_273977877-1024x457.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2024\/10\/Screenshot-2024-10-28-at-16.15.24_273977877-300x134.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2332px) 100vw, 2332px\" \/><\/div><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">The towable solar power generator is larger than needed for the OMBL races because the trailer is available to rent for other events and is also used for on-site installation work by Ed&#8217;s installation team.<\/p>\n<p>The set up inside the trailer looks like this:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li>2x <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/inverters-chargers\/multiplus-ii\" target=\"_blank\">MultiPlus<\/a>-II 48\/5000 120V &#8211; 10kVA, 8kW continuous rating<\/li>\n<li>1x <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/autotransformers\/autotransformers\" target=\"_blank\">Autotransformer<\/a> 100A in a 120V\/240V split-phase configuration<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/communication-centres\/cerbo-gx\" target=\"_blank\">Cerbo GX MK2<\/a> + <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/display-and-panels\/gx-touch-50\" target=\"_blank\">GX Touch 70<\/a> communication centre device and touch-screen user interface. There&#8217;s a GPS receiver to allow for Victron Remote Management <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/panel-systems-remote-monitoring\/vrm\" target=\"_blank\">VRM<\/a> solar forecast updates and geofencing &#8211; so the trailer can be tracked if it\u2019s ever stolen.<\/li>\n<li>8x <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/batteries\/lithium-battery-12-8v\" target=\"_blank\">Lithium Battery Smart<\/a> 200Ah 25.6V battery modules (40kWh total)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\"><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li>Lynx Smart BMS 500A takes care of the battery management for Victron Lithium batteries; there&#8217;s a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/dc-distribution-systems\/lynx-power-in\" target=\"_blank\">Lynx Power In<\/a> for connecting the DC power distribution and two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/dc-distribution-systems\/lynx-distributor\" target=\"_blank\">Lynx Distributors<\/a> with monitored fuses.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/battery_protect\/smart-battery-protect\" target=\"_blank\">Smart BatteryProtect<\/a> 48\/100 disconnects the batteries from non essential loads before they become excessively depleted. \u00a0The system includes a 48V air conditioner via ATD on the BMS<\/li>\n<li>2x <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/dc-dc-converters\/orion-tr-smart-non-isolated\" target=\"_blank\">Orion-Tr Smart<\/a> 48\/12-30A DC to DC power supply provides 12V power for ham radios, vent fan, and electric jack<\/li>\n<li>1x <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/solar-charge-controllers\/smartsolar-100-30-100-50\" target=\"_blank\">SmartSolar MPPT<\/a> 150\/45 Solar Charge Controller maximises the power harvest from solar panels.<\/li>\n<li>6x Merlin Solar TBS240L (240W) flexible adhesive panels on the roof<\/li>\n<li>8x Merlin Solar Panther 200 (200W) portable panels connected to a Hoymiles HMS-2000-4T-NA four port microinverter (two panels per MPPT) for a total of 1600W of AC-coupled solar on the ground when needed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li>These back-feed the AC output of the inverters<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a Meter to measure the output of the Hoymiles inverter so VRM accurately accounts for the AC-coupled PV production<\/li>\n<li>1x Starlink Gen3 Standard antenna mounted flat on the roof to provide Internet access in remote locations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li>This network is used as a WLAN at the race infield to network the computers, timing system, and a large-screen TV for live results to the spectators, SA\u2019s, coaches, etc.<\/li>\n<li>It also provides Internet access for live race updates online for people not at the race to keep up-to-date on race results<\/li>\n<li>It also provides public WiFi access when cellular service isn\u2019t getting more children outside, away from screens, and on bikes.
