{"id":27904,"date":"2024-02-29T17:08:26","date_gmt":"2024-02-29T15:08:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/?p=27904"},"modified":"2025-04-28T13:05:37","modified_gmt":"2025-04-28T11:05:37","slug":"pacific-island-goes-green","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/2024\/02\/29\/pacific-island-goes-green\/","title":{"rendered":"Pacific Island goes green"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After a one-kilowatt Hydro Turbine was destroyed by a hurricane in 2015 the residents of Imaki Village, Tanna Island, Vanuatu spent the next eight years generating a few hours of electricity a day from an old petrol generator &#8211; on hire.<\/p>\n<p>That limited power was provided to a hospital and a school.<\/p>\n<p>Donations of two advanced turbines, along with the water management infrastructure came from New Zealand specialist Eco Innovation; and the electronic devices needed for 24-hour power supply were funded by a US benefactor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"font_0 wixui-rich-text__text\"><span class=\"wixui-rich-text__text\"><span class=\"color_11 wixui-rich-text__text\">Groundwork laid by students and research fellows from the University of New South Wales <\/span><span class=\"color_11 wixui-rich-text__text\">students&#8217; <\/span><\/span><span class=\"wixui-rich-text__text\"><span class=\"color_11 wixui-rich-text__text\">solar energy project:<\/span><\/span><span class=\"wixui-rich-text__text\"><span class=\"color_11 wixui-rich-text__text\">\u00a0<em>\u00c9nergie renouvelable Vanuatu, <\/em>including a\u00a0solar array, mini-grid cabling, and hydropower systems helped pave the way for today&#8217;s installation.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The power plant was then built by volunteer father-and-son team Edward and Michael Lawley (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.powerspout.com\" target=\"_blank\">Eco Innovation<\/a>) with support from Colm Franklin (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.indepower.co.nz\" target=\"_blank\">Independent Power<\/a>, NZ) and design help from Hugh Piggot (<a href=\"https:\/\/scoraigwind.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\">Scoraig Wind<\/a>, UK).<\/p>\n<p>They spent a busy week on location &#8211; overwhelmed by the support of 300 locals who energetically provided their labour in order to secure reliable power.<\/p>\n<p>Hauling a thousand metres of 80mm polyurethane pipe through the jungle, carrying a ton of materials to site on their backs by wading uphill through the river, constructing a water course, installing the hydro generator, installing the power plant, and teaching the islanders how to maintain the installation themselves &#8211; was all achieved in eight days!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2024\/02\/Screenshot-2024-02-13-at-11.45.59_251676444.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-27913\" src=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2024\/02\/Screenshot-2024-02-13-at-11.45.59_251676444-1024x764.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"764\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2024\/02\/Screenshot-2024-02-13-at-11.45.59_251676444-1024x764.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2024\/02\/Screenshot-2024-02-13-at-11.45.59_251676444-1500x1119.png 1500w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2024\/02\/Screenshot-2024-02-13-at-11.45.59_251676444-750x560.png 750w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2024\/02\/Screenshot-2024-02-13-at-11.45.59_251676444-1536x1146.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2024\/02\/Screenshot-2024-02-13-at-11.45.59_251676444-300x224.png 300w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2024\/02\/Screenshot-2024-02-13-at-11.45.59_251676444.png 1726w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The power supply consists of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>2x\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/solar-charge-controllers\/smartsolar-mppt-rs-450-tr\" target=\"_blank\">SmartSolar MPPT RS<\/a>\u00a0 450\/100 solar charge controllers. These high voltage charge controllers have been designed for larger solar arrays, and have multiple solar trackers. Their installation allows redundancy &#8211; by routing hydro and solar harvests through a single device if necessary, or for future expansion of either the solar panels or water turbines.<\/li>\n<li>The Solar Array offers 7.5kWp<\/li>\n<li>2 x PLT 150V P hydro Turbines produce 1.8 kW. The water course is able to support more power generation.<\/li>\n<li>A Lithium battery bank storing 20kWh<\/li>\n<li>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/inverters-chargers\/quattro\" target=\"_blank\">Quattro<\/a> Inverter\/Charger can provide 10kVA of continuous output.<\/li>\n<li>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/communication-centres\/cerbo-gx\" target=\"_blank\">Cerbo GX<\/a> communication centre device allows data communication between all components so that the sustainable power harvest, storage and supply is properly controlled. Real-time and historic system data can be viewed using the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/display-and-panels\/gx-touch-50\" target=\"_blank\">GX Touch 70<\/a> screen, which also provides access to system settings. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/communication-centres\/gx-lte-4g\" target=\"_blank\">GX LTE 4G<\/a> which has been designed for exactly this kind of remote installation and allows remote monitoring by engineers from anywhere in the world using the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/panel-systems-remote-monitoring\/vrm\" target=\"_blank\">Victron Remote Management<\/a> portal (VRM).<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/dc-distribution-systems\/lynx-distributor\" target=\"_blank\">Lynx Distributor<\/a> offers modular connection of covered busbars for a neat, safe installation area.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2024\/02\/Screenshot-2024-02-13-at-11.36.34_251670503.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-27910\" src=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2024\/02\/Screenshot-2024-02-13-at-11.36.34_251670503-1024x608.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"608\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2024\/02\/Screenshot-2024-02-13-at-11.36.34_251670503-1024x608.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2024\/02\/Screenshot-2024-02-13-at-11.36.34_251670503-2048x1215.png 2048w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2024\/02\/Screenshot-2024-02-13-at-11.36.34_251670503-1536x911.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2024\/02\/Screenshot-2024-02-13-at-11.36.34_251670503-300x178.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The new Hydro\/Solar system reliably produces 60kWh per day which is distributed to a nearby hospital providing healthcare for thousands of islanders.
