{"id":27086,"date":"2024-02-09T10:02:49","date_gmt":"2024-02-09T08:02:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/?p=27086"},"modified":"2024-02-10T11:19:32","modified_gmt":"2024-02-10T09:19:32","slug":"science-class-chooses-top-gear","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/2024\/02\/09\/science-class-chooses-top-gear\/","title":{"rendered":"Science class chooses top gear"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div class=\"WordSection1\">Solving the problem of how to be in three places at once, a solar powered science lab is bringing the latest technology to students in three campuses in Texas, USA.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The Rio Hondo Independent School District (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.riohondoisd.net\/article\/1412089\" target=\"_blank\">RHISD<\/a>) wanted to combine the excitement of having a dedicated technology laboratory in an interesting venue &#8230;and to be able to offer it to all their students &#8211; located across three campuses.<\/p>\n<p>Their answer was to commission a 49 foot trailer &#8211; the expandable sides of which are packed with technology.<\/p>\n<p>Providing learning for 24 &#8211; or more &#8211; students the mobile science lab has learning stations offering Augmented Reality headsets, 3D printers, there&#8217;s a 55 inch touch screen classroom display, a bank of audio-visual screens complete with surround sound &#8211; and an independent high speed mobile internet connection keeps it all streaming.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, and as you might expect with the latest in lab innovation, the power to run all this technology (and the Air Conditioning system) comes from both real-time and battery-stored solar energy.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2024\/02\/Student-Using-VR-_251083178-scaled.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-27851\" src=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2024\/02\/Student-Using-VR-_251083178-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2024\/02\/Student-Using-VR-_251083178-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2024\/02\/Student-Using-VR-_251083178-1500x1125.jpg 1500w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2024\/02\/Student-Using-VR-_251083178-750x563.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2024\/02\/Student-Using-VR-_251083178-2048x1536.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2024\/02\/Student-Using-VR-_251083178-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2024\/02\/Student-Using-VR-_251083178-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The trailer\/classroom was designed and built by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brewco.com\" target=\"_blank\">Brewco Marketing Group<\/a> who specialise in branded mobile facilities across a number of industries. The &#8216;fifth wheel&#8217; trailer is a triple-axle 49\u2019 chassis with four Expandable panels. When the trailer is parked-up these expandable panels slide out to provide considerably enlarged accommodation. The classroom is pulled to location by pickup truck. Project Manager <em>Corbin Jewell<\/em> says: <em>This Mobile STEM Lab will be equipped to support RHISD curriculum and prep their students for careers in technology for many years to come<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2024\/02\/Right-Side-of-Control-ROom_251083145-scaled.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-27850\" src=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2024\/02\/Right-Side-of-Control-ROom_251083145-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2024\/02\/Right-Side-of-Control-ROom_251083145-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2024\/02\/Right-Side-of-Control-ROom_251083145-1500x1125.jpg 1500w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2024\/02\/Right-Side-of-Control-ROom_251083145-750x563.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2024\/02\/Right-Side-of-Control-ROom_251083145-2048x1536.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2024\/02\/Right-Side-of-Control-ROom_251083145-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2024\/02\/Right-Side-of-Control-ROom_251083145-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The power installation was completed by Jarrod Douglas &#8211; the <a href=\"https:\/\/rvinspectionguy.com\" target=\"_blank\">RV Inspection Guy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He installed twenty roof-mounted solar panels arranged in three strings of 8\/8\/4 panels offering a total of 4kWp. \u00a0Each solar string has a dedicated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/solar-charge-controllers\/smartsolar-mppt-ve.can\" target=\"_blank\">SmartSolar MPPT<\/a> Solar Charger &#8211; there are two 250V\/70A devices and a 150V\/70.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2024\/02\/Screenshot-2024-02-06-at-16.41.52_251084284.png\" target=\"_blank\"><div class=\"full-size-image container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-27854\" src=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2024\/02\/Screenshot-2024-02-06-at-16.41.52_251084284.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"928\" height=\"742\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2024\/02\/Screenshot-2024-02-06-at-16.41.52_251084284.png 928w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2024\/02\/Screenshot-2024-02-06-at-16.41.52_251084284-750x600.png 750w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2024\/02\/Screenshot-2024-02-06-at-16.41.52_251084284-300x240.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 928px) 100vw, 928px\" \/><\/div><\/a><\/p>\n<p>(By the way, whenever you need to choose the right MPPT for your solar array this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/mppt-calculator\" target=\"_blank\">MPPT calculator<\/a> is invaluable).<\/p>\n<p>The DC solar harvest is stored in two banks of Battle Born batteries &#8211; each holding 13kWh. The batteries are wired in series to provide 48VDC to two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/inverters-chargers\/quattro\" target=\"_blank\">Quattro Inverter\/Chargers<\/a>, capable of 10kVA constant supply.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/dc-distribution-systems\/lynx-distributor\" target=\"_blank\">Lynx distributor 1000<\/a> offers a covered busbar rated at 1000A together with monitored fuses. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/dc-distribution-systems\/lynx-shunt-ve-can\" target=\"_blank\">Lynx Shunt<\/a>\u00a0is part of the neat distribution network and keeps track of the energy going-in and coming out of the batteries.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/communication-centres\/cerbo-gx\" target=\"_blank\">Cerbo GX<\/a> acts as the brains behind the installation, providing data communication between devices &#8211; and also to the end user &#8211; via a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/display-and-panels\/gx-touch-50\" target=\"_blank\">GX Touch 50.<\/a> The Cerbo GX also reports data to the internet and provides remote system access for engineering support or maintenance using the free-to-use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/panel-systems-remote-monitoring\/vrm\" target=\"_blank\">Victron Remote Management<\/a> platform VRM. Quattros have two AC power inlets and two AC power outlets. Typically the AC inlets are connected to an electricity main &#8211; whenever one is available &#8211; and also to a back-up generator. The unit will automatically switch to whichever power source is live. Of the two AC <em>outlets<\/em> the first is typically connected to provide critical loads with an uninterruptible power supply.
