{"id":26819,"date":"2023-08-19T17:38:17","date_gmt":"2023-08-19T15:38:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/?p=26819"},"modified":"2024-03-25T15:26:35","modified_gmt":"2024-03-25T13:26:35","slug":"our-sailors-earn-a-place-at-2024-summer-olympics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/2023\/08\/19\/our-sailors-earn-a-place-at-2024-summer-olympics\/","title":{"rendered":"Our Sailors earn a place at 2024 Summer Olympics!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Many congratulations to our sponsored sailors <em>Odile van Aanholt<\/em> and <em>Annette Duetz<\/em> who have just taken the Silver Medal in their latest Olympic-qualifying event!<\/p>\n<p>Completing their latest event yesterday (Friday 18th) sailing the super-fast skiff the <a href=\"https:\/\/49er.org\/class-info\/the-boat\/49erfx\/\" target=\"_blank\">49erFX<\/a> in their home waters at the Allianz Sailing World Championships, held at The Hague, Nederland, over a wide range of sea, tide and wind conditions the Dutch sailing duo secured their medal in spite of injury (sail-handler and foredeck foot-worker Annette raced wearing a knee brace) and in spite of a disqualification in race 6 for an over-zealous rounding of the third mark which burdened them with a 30 point penalty. Yet still they managed to stay ahead of 56 other boats!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2023\/08\/230811_ASWC_THEHAGUE_SE_2998_6448_236293261.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-26831\" src=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2023\/08\/230811_ASWC_THEHAGUE_SE_2998_6448_236293261-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2023\/08\/230811_ASWC_THEHAGUE_SE_2998_6448_236293261-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2023\/08\/230811_ASWC_THEHAGUE_SE_2998_6448_236293261-750x500.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2023\/08\/230811_ASWC_THEHAGUE_SE_2998_6448_236293261-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2023\/08\/230811_ASWC_THEHAGUE_SE_2998_6448_236293261.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Anyone who has ever finished last in a local yacht club race (am I alone?) will know that achieving 2nd place among a 58-boat fleet crewed by the world&#8217;s best sailors &#8211; in a competition as grand as the World Championships &#8211; is an AMAZING achievement!<\/p>\n<p>Throughout the sailing season Odile and Annette have consistently delivered top-performances keeping their names on the medal board.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_26836\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2023\/08\/230813_ASWC_THEHAGUE_SE_5124_3541_236293267.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26836\" class=\"wp-image-26836 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2023\/08\/230813_ASWC_THEHAGUE_SE_5124_3541_236293267-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2023\/08\/230813_ASWC_THEHAGUE_SE_5124_3541_236293267-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2023\/08\/230813_ASWC_THEHAGUE_SE_5124_3541_236293267-750x500.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2023\/08\/230813_ASWC_THEHAGUE_SE_5124_3541_236293267-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2023\/08\/230813_ASWC_THEHAGUE_SE_5124_3541_236293267.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-26836\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Denmark&#8217;s Nojgaard and Bojsen-Moller emerging from a trough<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Rolling seas and high winds earlier in the competition threw many sailors overboard, whilst the soft breezes and strong tides towards the end of the event tested every team&#8217;s tactics with many pile-ups at the marks.<\/p>\n<p>During one event &#8211; the dinghy class known as the Ilca 7 in which seventy-boats were competing &#8211; there was a whirlpool-crush at the first turn which only became more chaotic as the boats which had missed the mark in the strong tide performed a &#8216;turn-around&#8217; &#8211; presenting themselves at the mark moments later for a second time as yet more competitors piled in from further down the fleet.
