For much of the time his BMW i3 Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) has sufficient range for his daily needs. On occasion though one of his commutes from the Irish countryside to Dublin, involves a trip of around 70 miles.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"st\"><span class=\"f\">The BMW i3&#8217;s official range is 130 to 160 km (80 to 100 miles), but in winter with the heating on, wipers and lights &#8211; then the range can be on the limit for that journey. A bit of range security was needed, so Ronan came up with the idea of s<\/span>upplementary battery system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"st\">Turning to Victron Energy supplier Paul Cunningham of <a title=\"Marine Electrics\" href=\"http:\/\/www.marineelectrics.ie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marine Electrics,<\/a> they put together a charging system consisting of 2 x <a title=\"12.8V-90Ah Lithium Batteries\" href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/batteries\/lithium-battery-12-8v\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">12.8V-90Ah Lithium<\/a> batteries in parallel and 2 x Phoenix C12\/2000 Inverters in parallel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Marine Electrics, D\u00fan Laoghaire, County Dublin<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"st\">Pictured below from left to right are Paul, Gavin and Roland of Marine Electrics handing over the system.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Marine_Electrics.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><div class=\"full-size-image container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2480\" src=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Marine_Electrics.jpg\" alt=\"Marine_Electrics\" width=\"730\" height=\"494\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2015\/01\/Marine_Electrics.jpg 730w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2015\/01\/Marine_Electrics-300x203.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px\" \/><\/div><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ronan&#8217;s <span class=\"st\"><span class=\"f\">s<\/span>upplementary battery system<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"st\">Using the BMW 13A charging lead at 230 VAC, the system can now charge Ronan&#8217;s car in an emergency at the side of the road, at a continuous 3,000 Watts. <\/span>This takes about 45-50 minutes and gives around another 15 km range, which is sufficient to get him to his destination.<\/p>\n<p>At work or at home a 30A Victron charger tops up the <span class=\"st\"><span class=\"f\">s<\/span>upplementary battery system, ready for standby use once again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Boot.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><div class=\"full-size-image container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2481 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Boot.jpg\" alt=\"Supplementary Battery System\" width=\"730\" height=\"519\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2015\/01\/Boot.jpg 730w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2015\/01\/Boot-300x213.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 730px) 100vw, 730px\" \/><\/div><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Postscript from Ronan: &#8221; Since the photo above was taken, I have rearranged\u00a0 and secured the parallel inverters in the boot and placed a battery behind each of the front seats, for neatness, security and safety.
