{"id":24120,"date":"2022-02-25T09:19:51","date_gmt":"2022-02-25T07:19:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/?p=24120"},"modified":"2022-03-05T00:15:53","modified_gmt":"2022-03-04T22:15:53","slug":"no-whine-in-the-cellar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/2022\/02\/25\/no-whine-in-the-cellar\/","title":{"rendered":"No whine in the cellar?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>The owner of a large house in San Pedro Garza Garcia, Mexico, always regretted that the 40kWp grid-feed solar array he had installed at his property was not able to provide power to his home when the grid failed.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>That limitation almost proved catastrophic.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>He uses his basement to park two Teslas &#8230;and as a workshop; there&#8217;s a TV room; it&#8217;s used for general storage &#8211; and it&#8217;s also the location of his consumer unit and circuit breakers. The problem is that during extreme weather events the basement is prone to flooding &#8211; for which he has extraction pumps ready for use.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>One evening, during a rainstorm, the grid power also failed &#8211; so he wasn&#8217;t able to operate his pumps. He and his caretaker rushed out to buy a petrol generator to begin pumping out the flood water before it accumulated to the height of the electric mains. It was a race against time &#8211; and their constant fear was that the sockets would become submerged, and that the grid-power would be restored whilst they were still in the basement.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>It was time to make a new arrangement.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-24237\" src=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2022\/02\/Working_Moment60_189537090-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2022\/02\/Working_Moment60_189537090-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2022\/02\/Working_Moment60_189537090-1500x1125.jpg 1500w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2022\/02\/Working_Moment60_189537090-750x563.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2022\/02\/Working_Moment60_189537090-2048x1536.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2022\/02\/Working_Moment60_189537090-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2022\/02\/Working_Moment60_189537090-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Seeing advertisements from Victron Installer\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/evotech.mx\" target=\"_blank\">Evotech<\/a>\u00a0he got in touch with them to learn about Energy Storage Systems (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/live\/ess:start\" target=\"_blank\">ESS<\/a>), together with some of the advanced features of the Quattro Inverter\/Charger. \u00a0Most useful to him was the ability to prioritise power supply to essential devices during blackouts; the ability to add power to the existing supply in cases of high demand; <strong>and<\/strong>\u00a0the fact that the system will only sell surplus power to the grid when no self-consumption or further energy storage is possible.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Deciding to retain all elements of the existing Solar Edge 30kW PV Inverter system, Evotech&#8217;s MD <em>Ricardo Rodriguez<\/em> designed an ESS which could be added to the existing installation &#8211; but also offer battery back up for 8 hours charged by its own 11kWp solar array. A new Pylontech battery storage of 20.2kWh is maintained at 100% for emergency use.<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>The main components of the system are:<\/div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>3 \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/inverters-chargers\/quattro\" target=\"_blank\">Quattro 5kVA<\/a> Inverter\/Chargers<\/li>\n<li>20 Solar Panels of 550 watts<\/li>\n<li>2 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/solar-charge-controllers\/smartsolar-mppt-rs-450-tr\" target=\"_blank\">MPPT RS 450\/100<\/a> Solar Charge Controllers<\/li>\n<li>6\u00a0 Pylontech Lithium Batteries with a capacity of 20.2kWh<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/panel-systems-remote-monitoring\/cerbo-gx\" target=\"_blank\">Cerbo GX<\/a> for whole system control, and remote live data and monitoring on <a href=\"https:\/\/vrm.victronenergy.com\/landingpage\" target=\"_blank\">VRM<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/panel-systems-remote-monitoring\/gx-touch-50\" target=\"_blank\">GX Touch 50<\/a> for local live data and monitoring<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_24222\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24222\" class=\"wp-image-24222 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2022\/02\/Work_In_Progress_3_189462355-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2022\/02\/Work_In_Progress_3_189462355-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2022\/02\/Work_In_Progress_3_189462355-1500x844.jpg 1500w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2022\/02\/Work_In_Progress_3_189462355-750x422.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2022\/02\/Work_In_Progress_3_189462355-2048x1152.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2022\/02\/Work_In_Progress_3_189462355-1536x864.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2022\/02\/Work_In_Progress_3_189462355-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-24222\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ricardo Rodriguez was pleased with the result<\/p><\/div>\n<p>A manual switch was installed to select between the backup system or public energy network, this is very useful when performing maintenance.<\/p>\n<p>Grid supply is becoming less reliable as demand increases, and weather phenomena become more common.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>And &#8211; like elsewhere in the world &#8211; Mexico has been facing steep rises in energy prices, with high-user tariffs (DAC rate) up to four times the price of economy units &#8211; the higher tariff being imposed by\u00a0Mexico&#8217;s national grid utility provider\u00a0CFE\u00a0to households whose energy use exceeds 4800kWh\/annum.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>This client&#8217;s domestic loads include charging for\u00a02 Tesla EV&#8217;s; there&#8217;s an elevator; several air conditioning units; a swimming pool; 8 or 10 pumps; space heaters; an industrial type 3-phase oven; plus lighting and wall sockets.<\/div>\n<div>To design the optimum system for this house, Evotech first\u00a0carried an energy analysis out to find out the consumption of the house over time. It helped a lot that their client was already monitoring his consumption with an energy meter.<\/div>\n<div>\n<div style=\"width: 1920px;\" class=\"wp-video\"><video class=\"wp-video-shortcode\" id=\"video-24120-1\" width=\"1920\" height=\"942\" preload=\"metadata\" controls=\"controls\"><source type=\"video\/mp4\" src=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2022\/02\/Energy_Diagnosis_189462332.mp4?_=1\" \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2022\/02\/Energy_Diagnosis_189462332.mp4\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2022\/02\/Energy_Diagnosis_189462332.mp4<\/a><\/video><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>From that information Evotech were able to size the appropriate battery capacity, Inverter\/Chargers and \u00a0solar power harvest required.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The knowledge that the basements pumps will operated come-what-may next time there is a flood is reassuring.
