{"id":23746,"date":"2021-11-22T14:36:56","date_gmt":"2021-11-22T12:36:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/?p=23746"},"modified":"2021-11-22T14:39:45","modified_gmt":"2021-11-22T12:39:45","slug":"we-are-the-champions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/2021\/11\/22\/we-are-the-champions\/","title":{"rendered":"WE are the CHAMPIONS!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A stunning performance by Netherlands duo Odile van Aanholt and Elise de Ruyter has resulted in them being crowned World Champions at the 49erFX sailing event in Oman yesterday!<\/p>\n<p>There are three remarkable qualities to their victory:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>firstly, the pair have only been sailing together for a few months<\/li>\n<li>secondly, they have only just taken up the baton from previous World Champion team mates &#8211; the now dissolved Netherlands partnership of Bekkering and Duetz whose top performances we have enjoyed for years<\/li>\n<li>and thirdly, race thirteen.\n<p><div id=\"attachment_23752\" style=\"width: 1010px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23752\" class=\"size-full wp-image-23752\" src=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2021\/11\/211117SAILINGENERGY_PM_OmanWorlds61119_7201_181348434.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2021\/11\/211117SAILINGENERGY_PM_OmanWorlds61119_7201_181348434.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2021\/11\/211117SAILINGENERGY_PM_OmanWorlds61119_7201_181348434-750x500.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2021\/11\/211117SAILINGENERGY_PM_OmanWorlds61119_7201_181348434-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-23752\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><\/div><\/a> 2021 World Championship Oman<br \/>\u00a9Sailing Energy \/ Oman Sail<\/p><\/div><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Let me tell you about race thirteen&#8230;!<\/p>\n<p>In a competition in which Odile and Elise performed consistently highly &#8211; recording two firsts, seconds, and thirds among many top ten placings in a field of 21 &#8211; came race thirteen which had the power to spoil everything for the pair.<\/p>\n<p>Race thirteen became their most remarkable performance of the event, you won&#8217;t often see such a remarkable race &#8230;and one which might well define the duo&#8217;s exciting racing style.<\/p>\n<p>Just before race thirteen began, in\u00a0light-airs, Odile and Elise incurred a penalty for pumping the mainsail &#8211; like a fish uses its tail &#8211; and\u00a0were forced to take a 360 degree go-around allowing everyone over the start line and leaving them in last place. That was a big price to pay when you consider that at that stage in the competition they were &#8216;number one&#8217; on the score board, and so this fault had the potential to knock them out of the top three.<\/p>\n<p>But no &#8211; angry with themselves perhaps from the back of the pack they sailed like they were possessed by demons &#8211; clawing their way up the ranks so that even by the first leg (of four) they had already overtaken half the fleet to turn in eleventh place. Then came a moment of genius: With all the leaders setting their gennakers for the downwind leg and steering off to the right (starboard) of the course, Odile had spotted some wind off to the left (port) and became the first boat to strike out in that direction.
