{"id":21854,"date":"2021-01-05T10:17:50","date_gmt":"2021-01-05T08:17:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/?p=21854"},"modified":"2021-01-07T14:56:06","modified_gmt":"2021-01-07T12:56:06","slug":"empowering-myanmar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/2021\/01\/05\/empowering-myanmar\/","title":{"rendered":"Empowering Myanmar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There&#8217;s an ambitious programme to bring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/markets\/energy-access\" target=\"_blank\">PAYGo<\/a> electricity to remote island communities in Myanmar.<\/p>\n<p>Owing to the difficult terrain in Myanmar, currently only fifty per cent of the population has access to reliable energy.<\/p>\n<p>But in the State of Tanintharyi &#8211; a region of over 800 islands &#8211; that is now changing, one mini grid at a time.\u00a0Heading up this initiative <a href=\"https:\/\/www.techno-hill.com\" target=\"_blank\">Techno-Hill Engineering<\/a>\u00a0have a team of 40 engineers who are already widely experienced in large-systems having completed 20 mini grid infrastructures, capable of supplying 7,000 households with 24 hour power &#8211; which benefits over 40,000 people.\u00a0Each sustainable mini grid, serving hundreds of households, breathes new life into communities whose nearest source of electricity was, previously, more than ten miles away.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/12\/IMG-54a4fcbabec7ccda24ab7c97f0d0f1a3-V_151870552.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-21892\" src=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/12\/IMG-54a4fcbabec7ccda24ab7c97f0d0f1a3-V_151870552-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/12\/IMG-54a4fcbabec7ccda24ab7c97f0d0f1a3-V_151870552-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/12\/IMG-54a4fcbabec7ccda24ab7c97f0d0f1a3-V_151870552-750x563.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/12\/IMG-54a4fcbabec7ccda24ab7c97f0d0f1a3-V_151870552-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/12\/IMG-54a4fcbabec7ccda24ab7c97f0d0f1a3-V_151870552.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A typical installation has been installed at Kyauk Kar village which can offer up to 209kW of energy. The system comprises:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>656 Solar Panels of 330Wp<\/li>\n<li>144 Batteries &#8211; 2V 3000Ah<\/li>\n<li>9 Victron <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/inverters-chargers\/quattro\" target=\"_blank\">Quattro<\/a>\u00a0Inverter\/Chargers 15kVA<\/li>\n<li>5 Fronius 27kWp Inverters<\/li>\n<li>16 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/solar-charge-controllers\/smartsolar-mppt-ve.can\" target=\"_blank\">SmartSolar<\/a> MPPT Solar Charge Controllers<\/li>\n<li>1 back up Generator rated at 130kVA<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The total capacity of the battery bank is 864 kWh, and the panels will often generate over 1500kWh of energy in a day.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/12\/viber_image_2020-12-15_13-57-10-2_151870543.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-21887\" src=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/12\/viber_image_2020-12-15_13-57-10-2_151870543-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/12\/viber_image_2020-12-15_13-57-10-2_151870543-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/12\/viber_image_2020-12-15_13-57-10-2_151870543-1500x1125.jpg 1500w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/12\/viber_image_2020-12-15_13-57-10-2_151870543-750x563.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/12\/viber_image_2020-12-15_13-57-10-2_151870543-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/12\/viber_image_2020-12-15_13-57-10-2_151870543-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/12\/viber_image_2020-12-15_13-57-10-2_151870543.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>So far, over 2MW of installed energy power the lives of 40,000 people &#8211; at home, at work, and in school.<\/p>\n<p>Techno-Hill&#8217;s Managing Director, Barani Aung, explains that the cost of \u00a0each installation is part-funded by an 80% loan from several organisations: The World Bank; Myanmar&#8217;s own domestic Department of Rural Development National Electrification Program; The Rockefeller Foundation; and Techno-Hill themselves. The remaining 20% is provided by the community.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/12\/viber_image_2020-12-11_14-13-17_151870547.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-21889\" src=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/12\/viber_image_2020-12-11_14-13-17_151870547-759x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"759\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/12\/viber_image_2020-12-11_14-13-17_151870547-759x1024.jpg 759w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/12\/viber_image_2020-12-11_14-13-17_151870547-750x1012.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/12\/viber_image_2020-12-11_14-13-17_151870547-222x300.jpg 222w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/12\/viber_image_2020-12-11_14-13-17_151870547.jpg 949w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 759px) 100vw, 759px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Once installed, local businesses and households pay for their electricity using a Pay As You Go meter at a cost of 26 cents (US) per kWh unit. Not only is that cost remarkably cheap compared with the 60c &#8211; 1USD per unit which some communities pay for diesel-generated electricity, but generators typically run for just 4 or 5 hours per day; the quality of the electricity produced is poor (causing frequent failures for users of computers, or other sensitive equipment); and diesel fuel itself has to be regularly transported from far away in order to keep the generators running. All of this places obvious restrictions on local development, meaning businesses cannot operate at full capacity, and households cannot always get their power when they most need it &#8211; at night.<\/p>\n<p>Electricity is not the only benefit: Techno-Hill implement a program of on-going training, offering continual improvement for their engineers, and they educate local residents in the safe use of electricity.<\/p>\n<h4>What is electricity used for?<\/h4>\n<p>Of primary concern to Techno-Hill are the island communities where one of the most successful industries is fishing &#8211; Lobster and whitefish are caught and often exported to Thailand. The availability of a reliable source of electricity enables fisherman to achieve best prices by exporting premium-quality fish which have been kept in filtered, aerated tanks. Having graduated in Singapore, Barani&#8217;s background is in building data-centres for system control and monitoring. Unusually, a number of the organisations involved in the roll-out of Myanmar&#8217;s sustainable energy programme are headed up by women. Barani says she recognises that she has more opportunity for personal development than did, for example, her mother. Techno-Hill aim to connect 50,000 households by 2024 &#8211; well on the way to bringing electricity to all who need it for their development. Taking the country as a whole, there are 20,000 villages yet to be connected to an electricity supply.
