Innovation and Power<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is the theme of my first blog for the new year. Over the holiday period I was privileged to meet David Gray C.Eng MRINA SNAME MYDSA, of Mylne Yacht Design. David is also Chief Naval Architect of their sister company Ace Marine Limited.<\/p>\n

The highlight of the day for me as an an electric sailing yacht owner and sailor, was seeing the Mylne Bolt 18, all electric propulsion Superyacht tender, in the flesh. A photo of this classic looking tender, styled and built in a modern package can be seen in the headline image above, whilst berthed in Monaco.<\/p>\n

Mylne have a fabulous pedigree going back to 1896 with over 650 original designs, 7,000 original drawings + technical papers and original correspondence books in the Mylne archive, which represents one of the most important historical yachting records in the world.<\/p>\n

Out with the old and in with the new<\/strong><\/p>\n

That may well be the greeting for the new year, but that is certainly not the case with the Mylne boats. Here are a few photos of their classics first, to whet your appetite, before we see how the modern Bolt 18 uses a Victron Centaur charger<\/a> in a novel and interesting way.<\/p>\n

Bolt 18 using Centaur 12\/20 charger<\/strong><\/p>\n

Here in David’s words is how the Centaur has been integrated into the Bolt 18 and the novel way in which it is being used.<\/p>\n

“The Victron battery charger is a nice piece of kit and gives us 3 usefully powerful 12V sources. The charger not only charges the small 12V motorcycle battery (top right of photo below<\/em>) but also provides the power for the lighting, bilge pumps, search lamp and other current hungry house loads on the boat. It very usefully runs from 220V AC when the boat is plugged into the mains, but also continues to operate on 400V DC from the main 400V boat’s 24 kW Lithium battery, when this is brought online. This changeover is achieved through a dedicated system controlled relay.”<\/p>\n

“When the system is turned on the little 12V battery first closes the pre-charge contactor. This allows the 400V to flow into the controller through a 50 ohm resister (max 8 amps) to charge up the capacitors in the controller. Once the capacitors have been charged (within a second or two), the main contactor is then allowed to close and the system is live.”<\/p>\n

The photo above shows the Centaur tucked away in the port\/forward side underneath the bow. Here are Bolt’s specs which gives us some idea of the ever increasing power demands in modern systems.<\/p>\n
