And some very smart houses. However, when the family is staying in the house they require 130A per phase. Their Victron system doubles-up as a very large PowerAssist &#8211; as well as providing battery backup during South Africa&#8217;s load shedding &#8211; scheduled power outages &#8211; and the occasional local grid failure.<\/p>\n<p>The Reekie home in Zimbali has a 41.5kWp solar array on the roof split between AC and DC coupled strings.\u00a0 The DC coupled bank feeds a 100kWh Lithium battery and 45kVA of Victron inverter power.\u00a0 The AC coupled bank feeds a 20kW three-phase Fronius inverter which is controlled by the Victron system. Backup power can be provided by a 60kVA three-phase Diesel Generator.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/11\/Screenshot-2020-11-03-at-12.52.32_148253862.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The system comprises:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>3 x 15kVA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/inverters-chargers\/quattro\" target=\"_blank\">Victron Quattro<\/a>\u00a0Inverter\/Chargers<\/li>\n<li>C2 x <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/solar-charge-controllers\/smartsolar-250-85-250-100\" target=\"_blank\">250\/100 MPPTs<\/a> with 40 x 415Wp Canadian Solar facing South West<\/li>\n<li>Fronius 20kW with 60 x 415Wp facing North West<\/li>\n<li>FreedomWon 100kWh LiFePo4 Battery<\/li>\n<li>60kVA Diesel Generator<\/li>\n<li>3 phase energy meter on AC input and Generator input<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The substantial system was supplied and installed by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.solarvest.net\" target=\"_blank\">Solarvest<\/a> who have installed over 200 systems in the province and elsewhere around the country over the past decade.\u00a0 They are Victron Authorised installers and well-known experts in large Victron installations.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/11\/Screenshot-2020-11-03-at-12.55.49_148253966.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-21649\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Solarvest was supported in the installation by <a href=\"http:\/\/ultimate-group.co.za\" target=\"_blank\">Ultimate Electrical Solutions<\/a> who built the stainless-steel cabinet to house the inverters and MPPTs in the machinery room (which is situated underneath the swimming pool!).\u00a0 The generator was supplied by Dedicated Power and the integration with the Victron Quattro&#8217;s was configured by Solarvest.\u00a0 The incredible 100kWh FreedomWon battery was built and supplied by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freedomwon.co.za\" target=\"_blank\">FreedomWon<\/a> in South Africa.\u00a0 FreedomWon are officially supported by Victron and the battery is capable of discharging an incredible 2000 Amps on a continuous basis.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/11\/Screenshot-2020-11-03-at-12.56.09_148254030.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-21650\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Another refinement to this significant installation is the way it integrates with the <em>Control4 Home Automation system<\/em> to automate the configuration of the grid setpoint and battery minimum state of charge based on whether the Reekie&#8217;s were staying in Zimbali or not.<\/p>\n<p>Basil Reekie has an unusual hobby: he is a remarkably capable home automation engineer.\u00a0 He has used the Control4 automation system in his homes for several years &#8211; configuring over 200 add-on drivers to the base Control4 platform.\u00a0 In collaboration with Warwick Chapman from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sensible.co.za\/?r_done=1\" target=\"_blank\">Sensible Solar<\/a> and Matthew Walsh from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/techupsa\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tech Up Consulting<\/a> (both Victron Authorised Installers), the team used a Modbus TCP driver for Control4 to read the current battery SoC from the Victron system &#8211; based on that information, and whether power hungry equipment (e.g. the sauna and steam room) are currently turned on, it adjusts the grid set-point.\u00a0 This configuration allows Basil&#8217;s system to automatically adjust these values based on the power requirements of the house; available battery power; and whether the Reekie&#8217;s are at home.\u00a0 When in Residence they&#8217;re able to maintain the SoC between 60% and 90% quite comfortably &#8211; despite peak electrical usage of up to 130A &#8211; while ensuring that the draw on the grid never gets too close to 80A per phase.\u00a0 In the extremely unlikely event of the SoC dropping too close to the chosen minimum SoC (40%), Control4 also turns off non-essential high power utilising equipment such as Pool Heaters and less important Air-Conditioning Zones.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/11\/WhatsApp-Image-2020-10-26-at-17.55.53_149719055.jpeg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-21776\" src=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2020\/11\/WhatsApp-Image-2020-10-26-at-17.55.53_149719055-1024x768.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Since implementing the automation, the battery has never dropped below 50% when power management is active and has never exceeded 90% when there is still solar power available.\u00a0 Thus the solution met the Reekie\u2019s 2 requirements, namely:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Utilise all available solar power while they are in residence and using a lot of electricity;<\/li>\n<li>Never overload the grid connection &#8211; thus avoiding circuit tripping.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Power Management is turned on and off (along with many other home automation features) by pushing one virtual Control 4 button on a Touchscreen (or iPad) which changes a variable called \u201cInResidence\u201d &#8211; which alerts the system as to whether or not the House is in use and, thus, whether active power management as outlined above is required.<\/p>\n<p>Basil has also configured the system to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>announce a power cut over the house speakers (usually caused by a load-shedding event) and also announce reconnection to grid electricity.
