It&#8217;s better to have one smaller integrated unit than two larger ones with additional wiring. This is happily the case with the new combined Lynx Ion + Shunt 350A or 600A battery management system (BMS), which replaces the separate units of the\u00a0<a title=\"Lynx Ion\" href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/live\/dc_distribution\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lynx Ion<\/a>\u00a0 and the <a title=\"Lynx Shunt VE.Can\" href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/battery-monitors\/lynx-shunt-ve-can\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lynx Shunt VE.Can<\/a>. Not only that, but of course the new unit is easier to connect, takes up less space and even costs less. What&#8217;s not to like?<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Before getting into any further benefits, let&#8217;s first recap how the new Lynx Ion + Shunt fits into a complete Lithium Ion battery system.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Lithium Ion (LiFePO4\/LFP) battery system components<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>One or multiple <a title=\"Lithium battery 24V 180Ah\" href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/batteries\/lithium-battery-12-8v\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Victron 24V 180Ah Lithium-Ion batteries<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>The <a title=\"Lynx Power In\" href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/dc-distribution-systems\/lynx-power-in\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lynx Power In<\/a>, a modular DC bus bar.<\/li>\n<li>The Lynx Ion + Shunt is the battery management system (BMS) that controls the batteries. A 350 or 600 Ampere safety relay is inside the Lynx Ion + Shunt.<\/li>\n<li>The <a title=\"Lynx Distributor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/dc-distribution-systems\/lynx-distributor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lynx Distributor<\/a>, a DC distribution system with locations for four DC fuses for several batteries.<\/li>\n<li>A waterproof Ion Control remote monitoring panel and\/or optionally a <a title=\"Color Control GX\" href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/panel-systems-remote-monitoring\/colorcontrol\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Color Control GX<\/a> for offsite monitoring via the <a title=\"VRM Portal\" href=\"https:\/\/vrm.victronenergy.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">VRM portal<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Lynx Ion + Shunt benefits<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When compared to the previous separate units solution, the new Lynx Ion + Shunt has the following additional benefits.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Previously the maximum current was 350A, If you needed to exceed that, then a complicated external relay was required. With the advent of the Lynx Ion + Shunt 600, this is no longer necessary.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Several new features are also part of the Lynx Ion + Shunt. These are.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Wire an external push button, and use the Lynx Ion as the main battery switch (SOC will be remembered while the system is off).<\/li>\n<li>Automatic recovery from a low voltage shutdown (see\u00a0<a title=\"Lynx-Ion-firmware-change-log\" href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Lynx-Ion-firmware-change-log.docx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lynx Ion &#8211; firmware changelog<\/a> for details).<\/li>\n<li>Diagnostics: see the last four reasons for shutdown in the Ion Control and the Color Control.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Sample Schematic<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Below is how a Lynx Ion + Shunt 600 fits into an integrated system. Note individually fused batteries.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Lynx_Ion_+_Shunt_600_extra_fuses.png\" target=\"_blank\"><div class=\"full-size-image container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1861\" src=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/Lynx_Ion_+_Shunt_600_extra_fuses.png\" alt=\"Lynx_Ion_+_Shunt_600_extra_fuses\" width=\"778\" height=\"953\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2014\/10\/Lynx_Ion_+_Shunt_600_extra_fuses.png 778w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2014\/10\/Lynx_Ion_+_Shunt_600_extra_fuses-730x894.png 730w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2014\/10\/Lynx_Ion_+_Shunt_600_extra_fuses-244x300.png 244w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 778px) 100vw, 778px\" \/><\/div><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Additional notes<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Any connected MPPT 150\/70 and MPPT 150\/85\u2019s and also Skylla-i\u2019s will be controlled via VE.Can, so it is no longer necessary to wire special allow-to-charge wires to these products, or use Cyrix-Li-Loads for them.<\/li>\n<li>Multis do still need an allow-to-charge and allow-to-discharge wire, and an <a title=\"Assistants introduction\" href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/documentation\/assistants:start\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Assistant<\/a> needs to be installed in the Multi.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Lynx components of a Victron Lithium Ion total battery system solution makes for a very easy installation, and is in fact a lot less complex than other systems due to the experience and insights Victron have embraced over the last few years with\u00a0LiFePO4\/LFP technologies.<\/p>\n<p>With such experience and by developing battery systems with a modular and integrated approach, in this rapidly developing market, Victron design has resulted in many contented customers.
