Like so many countries, Nigeria has a large jobless population &#8211; new recruits were drawn from amongst Nigeria&#8217;s unemployed.<\/p>\n<p>The first goal was to win the confidence of market stall holders that reliable power provision could be a reality &#8211; it was something no one had experienced before. The power installation was zoned into 160 10kWh systems &#8211; each providing power for between 60 and 80 shops.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/08\/Energyhub_110752573.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-17641 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/08\/Energyhub_110752573-1024x421.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"421\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/08\/Energyhub_110752573-1024x421.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/08\/Energyhub_110752573-750x309.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/08\/Energyhub_110752573-768x316.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/08\/Energyhub_110752573-300x123.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/08\/Energyhub_110752573.jpg 1094w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>800kVA of power is made available using 160 Victron\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/inverters-chargers\/multiplus-12v-24v-48v-800va-3kva\" target=\"_blank\">MultiPlus<\/a> inverter\/chargers. These inverters have a peak power capability equal to double their continuous output &#8211; which ensures smooth power supply even as air conditioning units, for example, cycle on-and-off. \u00a0320\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/solar-charge-controllers\/bluesolar-mppt-150-35\" target=\"_blank\">Blue solar MPPTs 150\/70<\/a>\u00a0units harvest the power from a 1.6MWp solar array, optimising the charge current to the Lithium iron battery bank.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/08\/PVpannels_110752665.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-17646 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/08\/PVpannels_110752665-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/08\/PVpannels_110752665-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/08\/PVpannels_110752665-750x563.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/08\/PVpannels_110752665-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/08\/PVpannels_110752665-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/08\/PVpannels_110752665.jpg 1280w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The system allows for future expansion &#8211; which is just as well because business is booming and demand for power is growing.<\/p>\n<p>This clean electricity &#8211; made affordable by smart meters &#8211; brings only benefits it seems: Whereas the price of generator-produced electricity was around 1000 Naira per day, smart energy has brought that cost down to 116 Naira, typically.<\/p>\n<h4>International recognition<\/h4>\n<p>The success of this huge project has received deserved international recognition &#8211; <em>Rensource<\/em> won the <strong>Excellence in Climate Solutions<\/strong>\u00a0award at the Transformational Business Awards ceremony (also known as \u2018the Oscars of the renewables world\u2019) which was held in June 2019, hosted by The International Finance Corporation (World Bank Group) and Financial Times.<\/p>\n<p>Since the completion of this project, four more markets now benefit from renewable electricity with a further fourteen scheduled. This is possible only if the technology works flawlessly over the years. &#8216;Low&#8217; or &#8216;No&#8217; system downtime and good system-level performance helps win customer confidence in the project &#8211; which decreases non-payment risk &#8230;a perfect scenario to recoup the initial investment. How do you ensure an efficient and cost-effective mini grid over time? One key element is to include lithium. Lithium has one of the least LCOE [Levelized Costs of Energy] compared to Lead acid.
