{"id":17422,"date":"2019-08-15T08:55:28","date_gmt":"2019-08-15T06:55:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/?p=17422"},"modified":"2020-07-13T16:18:05","modified_gmt":"2020-07-13T14:18:05","slug":"students-sustainable-design-awarded-second-place","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/2019\/08\/15\/students-sustainable-design-awarded-second-place\/","title":{"rendered":"Student&#8217;s sustainable design awarded second place"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An international team of students from\u00a0TU Delft &#8211; a Dutch university &#8211; has gained second place in a European competition to design and build sustainable housing.<\/p>\n<p>The competition <em>Solar Decathlon<\/em>\u00a0began in 2000 as the brainchild of a scientist working for the U.S. Department of Energy &#8211; such was the success of his idea to get student Architects and Engineers working together to imagine the housing of the future that the competition spawned regional events all over the world &#8211;\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/solardecathlon.eu\" target=\"_blank\">Solar Decathlon Europe<\/a>\u00a0is now a fixture, running every two years.<\/p>\n<h4>Decathlon<\/h4>\n<p>As the &#8216;Decathlon&#8217; name suggests, competition entries have to propose viable, buildable housing solutions in ten areas of interest:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Architecture,<\/li>\n<li>Engineering and Construction,<\/li>\n<li>Energy Efficiency,<\/li>\n<li>Communication and Social Awareness,<\/li>\n<li>Neighbourhood Integration and Impact,<\/li>\n<li>Innovation and Viability,<\/li>\n<li>Circularity and Sustainability,<\/li>\n<li>Comfort Conditions,<\/li>\n<li>House Functioning, and<\/li>\n<li>Energy Balance.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The rules\u00a0of the competition\u00a0are simple: design and build a smart\u00a0home powered by solar energy and construct it\u00a0within 14 days.\u00a0<em>Fourteen days!<\/em>\u00a0Achieving that result requires a lot of planning &#8211; the teams normally take two years to\u00a0prepare their entry. \u00a0The whole project becomes a proposal for future living where <em>design<\/em> and <em>construction<\/em> methods can help accelerate the built environment toward a more sustainable model.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/08\/IMG_20190703_121434_109643727.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-17434\" src=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/08\/IMG_20190703_121434_109643727-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/08\/IMG_20190703_121434_109643727-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/08\/IMG_20190703_121434_109643727-1500x1125.jpg 1500w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/08\/IMG_20190703_121434_109643727-750x563.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/08\/IMG_20190703_121434_109643727-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/08\/IMG_20190703_121434_109643727-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>TU Delft &#8211; MOR<\/h4>\n<p>The Dutch team &#8211; who called themselves MOR (Modular Office Renovation &#8211; for reasons which will become apparent) started with around 10 people, but grew during the following two years to a team of 52 students from 20 countries, studying 8 disciplines. The 2019 competition focused on the <strong>re-purposing of existing\u00a0buildings<\/strong>. In response to the challenge the MOR team decided they would transform Marconi Towers, in Rotterdam &#8211; which had been built around the 1970s, and was typical of commercial building styles in the Netherlands in that era &#8211; into a sustainable home.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/08\/DSC07034_109643710.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-17433\" src=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/08\/DSC07034_109643710-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/08\/DSC07034_109643710-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/08\/DSC07034_109643710-1500x1000.jpg 1500w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/08\/DSC07034_109643710-750x500.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/08\/DSC07034_109643710-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2019\/08\/DSC07034_109643710-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Team member Lawrence Liu &#8211; an Electrical Engineering student &#8211; says:<\/p>\n<p><em>I think the biggest motivation that everyone on this team shares is the fact that the goal of this competition is to create a more sustainable future &#8230;all types of innovative ideas could be applied and I think each of us are motivated to\u00a0contribute\u00a0to the overarching goal in our own way and means.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Lawrence&#8217;s job on the team\u00a0was initially to\u00a0design and build a working solar system which complemented the team&#8217;s building concept. It was a small project (5 kWp of panels + 6 kWh battery system powering a typical residential installation). He was particularly driven because solar technology is his major area of interest at TU Delft and he welcomed the opportunity\u00a0to gain some practical experience.<\/p>\n<h4>Victron seems ideal&#8230;<\/h4>\n<p>He noticed fellow students elsewhere in the university using a 48V Victron Energy\u00a0System together with a separate 350VDC system to test different charging voltage levels for e-bikes &#8230;and elsewhere a lighting project was also using Victron equipment &#8230;after investigation Lawrence was very interested in the Victron capability of integrating\u00a0DC circuits at different voltage levels through a single DC distribution system. He contacted Victron&#8217;s Johannes Boonstra to discuss\u00a0<em>Solar Decathlon Europe<\/em> in the hope of gaining ideas.<\/p>\n<p>Lawrence explained: <em>We have three different types of PV arrays and had planned for\u00a0two different DC circuits (ISB-C and LED\u00a0Lighting). Victron&#8217;s modular MPPT chargers and Lynx Ion BMS allowed us to integrate all the different generators and loads into a single DC bus, connected to a single inverter. This was something special that other brands that I encountered could not have done without more inverters and converters. Our design\u00a0concept of modularity\u00a0and flexibility extends even to our engineered\u00a0systems. On HVAC\u00a0installations we showcase several passive and active systems working together, optimized by our building automation system from PRIVA. Compared to other teams, we demonstrated many more systems working in harmony, but also each individual system has an integral role within our prototype and overall concept of our proposal. I think the results speak for themselves as out of the 10 sub-contests, we gained a top-three place in 8 of them.
