{"id":14602,"date":"2019-01-03T11:00:30","date_gmt":"2019-01-03T09:00:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/?p=14602"},"modified":"2019-01-04T14:32:31","modified_gmt":"2019-01-04T12:32:31","slug":"diy-ingenuity-hydro-power-mkii-part-i","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/2019\/01\/03\/diy-ingenuity-hydro-power-mkii-part-i\/","title":{"rendered":"DIY ingenuity: Hydro Power MkII &#8211; Part I"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You may recall a year ago a blog about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/2017\/12\/18\/diy-ingenuity-hydro-power-in-the-austrian-alps\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hydro Power<\/a>, in which Markus Pauritsch used a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maximum_power_point_tracking\" target=\"_blank\">MPPT<\/a> solar charge controller loaded and driven by a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pelton_wheel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pelton wheel<\/a> water turbine to charge his off-grid cabin battery system in the Austrian Alps.<\/p>\n<p>This year (the last day of 2018 as I write this) things have moved on from one man&#8217;s DIY system. The installation has now grown by necessity. The actual measured head between the fishpond and proposed generator house is 90m. Around 500m of pipe was required. The weight of the drum exceeded 1.5 tons, so movement to location was difficult once off the transport delivery vehicle. A chainsaw winch was used to ease installation, winching from tree to tree down the hill.<\/p>\n<p><a of 3 core 6<span class=\"st\">mm<sup>2<\/sup><\/span> copper earth type cable was chosen, buried with the help of an excavator.<\/p>\n<p><a house<\/h5>\n<p>The woodshed became the generator house, being close to the stream and with an easily built outlet for the Pelton wheel water, but first the stored wood had to be moved before
