{"id":13175,"date":"2018-05-31T08:49:37","date_gmt":"2018-05-31T06:49:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/?p=13175"},"modified":"2023-04-24T13:00:17","modified_gmt":"2023-04-24T11:00:17","slug":"stealing-the-silver","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/2018\/05\/31\/stealing-the-silver\/","title":{"rendered":"Stealing the Silver&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dutch sailor <em>Annemiek Bekkering<\/em> and her crew <em>Annette Duetz<\/em> put on a scorching display in their <a href=\"https:\/\/49er.org\/class-info\/the-boat\/49erfx\/\" target=\"_blank\">49erFX<\/a> to secure second place in the <a href=\"http:\/\/medemblikregatta.org\" target=\"_blank\">Medemblik Regatta<\/a> which concluded last weekend.<\/p>\n<p>The Dutch team had taken delivery of a brand new boat a couple of weeks earlier &#8211; they get a new one every couple of years &#8211; and spent five days setting-up the rig to their preferred arrangement, followed by five days of sea trials &#8230;then they were ready to go!<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Medemblik is an historic town about 40km from Amsterdam. It offers protected seas to watersports enthusiasts and race competitors alike in all conditions except winds from the East &#8211; which was the prevailing wind direction during the regatta! Fortunately the wind was not too strong.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2018\/05\/IMG_2169_71506726.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-blogpost-content wp-image-13222\" src=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2018\/05\/IMG_2169_71506726-690x460.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"690\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2018\/05\/IMG_2169_71506726-690x460.jpg 690w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2018\/05\/IMG_2169_71506726-730x487.jpg 730w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2018\/05\/IMG_2169_71506726-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2018\/05\/IMG_2169_71506726-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2018\/05\/IMG_2169_71506726-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 690px) 100vw, 690px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In fact it was the light wind conditions on all race days but one which made this a very technical race for the competitors. You may remember that at her last event &#8211; the World Cup Series in Hy\u00e8res, France &#8211; Annemiek was frequently disappointed with the position they achieved as they crossed the start line. For the Medemblik event they concentrated a lot of their effort on achieving great starts &#8230;and succeeded in that ambition 90% of the time.<\/p>\n<p>It was their over-enthusiasm in this regard which earned them a disqualification in one of the heats! What Annemiek aims to do is to cross the start line, at full speed, one millionth of a second after the gun has gone off. That&#8217;s a pretty fine-call!
