{"id":12916,"date":"2018-05-01T09:40:52","date_gmt":"2018-05-01T07:40:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/?p=12916"},"modified":"2026-04-06T17:35:09","modified_gmt":"2026-04-06T15:35:09","slug":"sun-but-no-wind","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/2018\/05\/01\/sun-but-no-wind\/","title":{"rendered":"Sun but no wind"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dutch sailor Annemiek Bekkering and her crew Annette Duetz have been in action again last weekend in their <a href=\"https:\/\/49er.org\/class-info\/the-boat\/49erfx\/\" target=\"_blank\">49erFX<\/a>. They had a frustrating week attending the World Cup Series in \u00a0Hy\u00e8res France &#8211; a week which produced the Sun (for which we envy them), but no wind.<\/p>\n<p>The key to a successful race under sail is to make a great start. If you&#8217;re out in front as you cross the line you already have two big advantages:<!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>you have clean wind;<\/li>\n<li>&#8230;and you can make independent decisions about your sailing course.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Annemiek laments that during these heats she repeatedly failed to get good starts. Light winds added to the frustration.<\/p>\n<p>But although she blames herself she is pleased with the lessons learned &#8211; particularly her consistent ability to climb through the pack by the first mark. Deciding the approach to get around crowded marks requires tactical skill and judgement &#8211; which you don&#8217;t need so much when you&#8217;re ahead of the fleet!<\/p>\n<p>She and her crew finished the series in 9th position, out of 39.
