If you live in the rural part of any country &#8216;public services&#8217; have a habit of passing you by; but in Botswana &#8211; with its half-a-million square kilometres of rural land &#8211; most of the country is &#8216;off grid&#8217;. That&#8217;s enough for the School&#8217;s pupils, office block, kitchen and up to 10 associated &#8216;staff houses&#8217;. A micro-grid.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2018\/03\/IMG_0001_64884434.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-blogpost-content wp-image-12400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2018\/03\/IMG_0001_64884434-690x460.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"690\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2018\/03\/IMG_0001_64884434-690x460.jpg 690w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2018\/03\/IMG_0001_64884434-730x487.jpg 730w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2018\/03\/IMG_0001_64884434-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2018\/03\/IMG_0001_64884434-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2018\/03\/IMG_0001_64884434-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 690px) 100vw, 690px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Energy Systems Group have been providing off-grid electrical solutions to industry, education and the domestic market since 1998. And given Botswana&#8217;s sunshine, their PV and Solar Water heaters are highly productive. \u00a0The government recognises the importance of education and seeks to offer an equal opportunity to all Botswanan children -regardless of whether they grow up in the city &#8211; or remotely. \u00a0No electricity means no computers &#8211; and without learning computer skills a child becomes part of a lost generation &#8230;unable to reach his\/her full potential. For that reason the Government have signed off this initiative which represents one of their biggest, newest investments.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2018\/03\/IMG_9961_64884550.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-blogpost-content wp-image-12401\" src=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2018\/03\/IMG_9961_64884550-690x460.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"690\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2018\/03\/IMG_9961_64884550-690x460.jpg 690w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2018\/03\/IMG_9961_64884550-730x487.jpg 730w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2018\/03\/IMG_9961_64884550-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2018\/03\/IMG_9961_64884550-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2018\/03\/IMG_9961_64884550-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 690px) 100vw, 690px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A long way from the cities, the sophistication of these electronic installations is an unfamiliar sight &#8211; but no short-cuts have been made in guaranteeing the future of electricity provision, with state of the art power plants which may comprise of up to 12\u00a0Inverters &#8211; 48V <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/inverters-chargers\/quattro\" target=\"_blank\">Quattro<\/a> 10kVA; \u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/solar-charge-controllers\" target=\"_blank\">BlueSolar<\/a> 150\/70 MPPTs. \u00a0There&#8217;s no shortage of sun, of course, to fire-up the\u00a0BlueSolar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/solar-pv-panels\/bluesolar-panels\" target=\"_blank\">PV Panels<\/a>\u00a0in arrays of up to 47kWp which harvest the power into\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/upload\/documents\/Datasheet-GEL-and-AGM-Batteries-EN.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">OPzV<\/a> Batteries banks as large as 288kWh.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2018\/03\/IMG_8538_64885295.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-blogpost-content wp-image-12407\" src=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2018\/03\/IMG_8538_64885295-690x460.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"690\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2018\/03\/IMG_8538_64885295-690x460.jpg 690w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2018\/03\/IMG_8538_64885295-730x487.jpg 730w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2018\/03\/IMG_8538_64885295-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2018\/03\/IMG_8538_64885295-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2018\/03\/IMG_8538_64885295-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 690px) 100vw, 690px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Now the very latest technology is available to these children as an educational tool. \u00a0No matter that their school is far out of town, increasingly rural children can enjoy the same advantages as children in the cities.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2018\/03\/IMG_0004_64885828.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-blogpost-content wp-image-12413\" src=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2018\/03\/IMG_0004_64885828-690x460.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"690\" height=\"460\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2018\/03\/IMG_0004_64885828-690x460.jpg 690w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2018\/03\/IMG_0004_64885828-730x487.jpg 730w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2018\/03\/IMG_0004_64885828-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2018\/03\/IMG_0004_64885828-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2018\/03\/IMG_0004_64885828-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 690px) 100vw, 690px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>By taking a long-term view the power needs of remote schools, villages &#8211; even towns &#8211; can be met through installing Solar Powered Micro-Grids. The power used by these far-sighted schemes is cleaner; uses less infrastructure; is more easily maintained; and is more secure from acts of god &#8230;or civil unrest. Not only that, they have their costs under control &#8230;and the price they pay for their power, over the lifetime of the installation is a fraction of the price paid by those of us who are grid-connected.<\/p>\n<p>Think about this: In the UK the average annual bill for electricity today is \u00a3600. The average annual electricity price-rise is 8%. In 25 years time (the lifetime of a solar panel) the average annual bill for electricity will be \u00a34,100. The economic argument for generating your own electricity from Solar Power has been won &#8211; it&#8217;s cheaper.<\/p>\n<p>In many ways &#8211; the Botswanan Government, and Botswanan schoolchildren are showing us the way ahead.
