{"id":10844,"date":"2017-10-16T13:39:02","date_gmt":"2017-10-16T11:39:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/?p=10844"},"modified":"2022-05-09T16:28:13","modified_gmt":"2022-05-09T14:28:13","slug":"another-shell-foundation-victron-energy-microgrid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/2017\/10\/16\/another-shell-foundation-victron-energy-microgrid\/","title":{"rendered":"Another Shell Foundation-Victron Energy microgrid"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In December last year we reported on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/2016\/12\/05\/access-to-energy-a-shell-foundation-victron-energy-microgrid\/\" target=\"_blank\">the first &#8216;Access to Energy&#8217;\u00a0 Shell Foundation &#8211; Victron Energy microgrid<\/a> in Ligad, North of Palawan island in the Philippines. Thousands of people still live in such areas where there is no access to electricity and the likelihood of any utility grid connection is aeons away. The Shell Foundation however set about changing that with the advent of that initial Ligad microgrid using Victron components. Now there is a second &#8211; and as I write this blog a third is also on its way. Power for the powerless is certainly becoming a reality.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>Palawan island<\/h3>\n<p>Let&#8217;s just remind ourselves of the area for these projects. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Palawan_(island)\" target=\"_blank\">Palwawan island<\/a> has been chosen several times as the most beautiful island in the world. Not surprising really as the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Palawan\" target=\"_blank\">Province of Palawan<\/a> is an archipelago in the Philippines which includes <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Palawan#UNESCO_World_Heritage_Sites\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">two UNESCO World Heritage Sites<\/a> plus breathtaking endless white beaches, wild forests and rugged mountains \u2013 all of a pure and untouched nature. The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Puerto_Princesa_Subterranean_River_National_Park\" target=\"_blank\">Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park<\/a> for instance is classed as one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New7Wonders_of_Nature\" target=\"_blank\">New7Wonders of Nature<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Microgrid No 2<\/h3>\n<p>Like the first microgrid this second one is situated in the North of Palawan island, but this time it is the village of Sitio Binaluan, Barangay (meaning rural district) <a href=\"https:\/\/translate.google.co.uk\/translate?hl=en&amp;sl=es&amp;u=https:\/\/es.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Liminangcong&amp;prev=search\" target=\"_blank\">Liminangcong<\/a>, in the municipality of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Taytay,_Palawan\" target=\"_blank\">Taytay<\/a>.\u00a0Victron Energy equipped once again, this microgrid is for 95 houses and has been up and running since February this year.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10874\" style=\"width: 700px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10874\" class=\"wp-image-10874 size-blogpost-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2017\/09\/Roof_48366027-690x518.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"690\" height=\"518\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2017\/09\/Roof_48366027.jpg 690w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2017\/09\/Roof_48366027-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 690px) 100vw, 690px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-10874\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Up and running.<\/p><\/div>\n<h3>Challenging logistics<\/h3>\n<p>Once again it was Koos and Josie Mulder of JK Solar Power House and their team who did the impossible.<\/p>\n<p>It might not be the correct photo size &#8216;exactly&#8217; for this blog of the team &#8211; but as you&#8217;ll see there were far greater challenges than pressing a camera button and sending me large format photos &#8211; so it would be remiss of me not to include the photo of these stalwarts!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10956\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10956\" class=\"wp-image-10956 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2017\/09\/JK-Team_48652723.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2017\/09\/JK-Team_48652723.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/10\/2017\/09\/JK-Team_48652723-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-10956\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><\/div> JK Solar Power House team pose with the Victron Energy system components.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>So, back to challenging logistics?<\/p>\n<p>Besides the Victron kit above &#8211; how about a 1,200 kg generator, 3,750 kg of batteries, 1,200 kg of solar panels, a 200 kg wind turbine, plus all the electricity posts, wires and ancillaries to transport and install. not the easiest of items to get up the hill!<\/p><\/div>\n<h3>System stats<\/h3>\n<p>The solar system can supply an average of 60kWh\/day, in summertime even a little bit<br \/>\nmore. In the rainy season or during a typhoon there is the genset as a backup, in case solar and<br \/>\nwind production should not be enough.<\/p>\n<p>System Components:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>2 x <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/inverters-chargers\/quattro\" target=\"_blank\">Quattro<\/a> 10kVa units in parallel<\/li>\n<li>4 x <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/solar-charge-controllers\/bluesolar-mppt-150-35\" target=\"_blank\">BlueSolar 150V\/85A MPPTs<\/a> in parallel<\/li>\n<li>1 x <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/panel-systems-remote-monitoring\/bmv-700\" target=\"_blank\">BMV-700 Series<\/a> battery monitor<\/li>\n<li>1 x <a href=\"https:\/\/www.victronenergy.com\/panel-systems-remote-monitoring\/color-control\" target=\"_blank\">Color Control GX<\/a><\/li>\n<li>60 x 260W solar panels giving 15.6kWp<\/li>\n<li>1 x 5kW Wind Turbine<\/li>\n<li>OPZV 48V\/2,000Ah battery bank<\/li>\n<li>33 kVa Diesel genset with automatic start\/stop<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The microgrid can be monitored via the Victron VRM website, but is unfortunately not always online. Whilst a good electricity supply has been achieved &#8211; it seems a solid internet connection is still on the wish list!
