Mining is a dangerous occupation, although nowadays there are safer and better working conditions. To provide a refuge or ‘safe-haven’ for miners suddenly trapped in a hazardous or toxic environment, the company MineARC builds emergency safe-refuges for the underground mining, tunnelling and chemical processing industries. Especially designed for hard rock mines are the HRM (Hard Rock Mine) Refuges, equipped with Victron Energy to assure safe power supply.
The SKB is a Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Company, tasked with managing Swedish nuclear and radioactive waste in a safe way. The company has different facilities in Sweden for storage, research and transportation of radioactive waste. At the ‘Aspo Hard Rock Laboratory’ much of the research on the final repository for spent nuclear fuel is being done. This laboratory has a depth of 500 meters, were researchers perform a series of experiments. In case of fire there is a rescue chamber 420 meter below ground, counted for 60 persons. A MultiPlus 24/3000/70 from Victron Energy is being used for emergency power to this chamber. The chamber can be provided of power for lights and air cleaning equipment for at least 6 hours.

Marketing company Paves BV, based in Zoetermeer (The Netherlands), designed a Digital Pavement Billboard with dual LCD screens and mini speakers. The purpose: communicating with the stream of potential customers walking past the premises of businesses on a daily basis. To provide electricity for the mobile display, Victron Energy developed a convenient battery system. This avoids dangerous cabling across the pavement. The system can be recharged when the unit is stored on company premises at night. The powerful batteries provide play throughout the day (around 12 hours).
A power breakdown can cause important mechanisms and installations to fail. Imagine defective level crossing gates, traffic lights, safety shutters or elevators. Victron offers a backup power system that easily solves this problem. The system consists of a Phoenix MultiPlus (inverter/charger combination), a Victron Gel battery and a BMV battery monitor. Due to its UPS functionality, the system can switch from mains to back up power within 20 milliseconds. This means that the installations dealing with the power breakdown will function without disruption. “Victron Energy has provided us with a reliable and efficient solution to power breakdown problems” says Han Buurman, Project Executive at the Dutch Ministry of Traffic and Rural Affairs.
Among other resources, South Africa is known for its platinum mines. To guarantee optimum safety, the mines are equipped with monitoring equipment above the ground. Having a continuous AC power supply is a necessity in order to ensure the safety of the mine-workers. A power failure can cause serious damages and endanger lives. The South African mines have therefore chosen to supply the mines with Victron backup power systems. Each shaft is equipped with a Phoenix inverter, a Filax transfer switch and a battery bank guarantying at least 2 days of stand by AC power. In case of a power drop or blackout, the inverter will take over and use battery power to run the electrical equipment in the shafts.
The “Polliniferoused Container Project” is a project of the Technical University of Delft (The Netherlands) and artist Kalliwoda. The laboratory is completely independent from local energy sources and can function upon itself. The container is furnished with two Victron Energy Phoenix MultiPlus units. Two thirds of the daily energy supply comes from solar energy, one third from wind energy. In case of dark and wind silent days, electric energy is being stored in lithium ion batteries. Two Multiplus 24/3000 units will then be responsible for the supply of power inside the container.
